The National Transportation Safety Board has recommended lowering the legal blood alcohol content limit to 0.05 from 0.08. Tell us: Would you support a lower BAC? Do you think it would curb drunk driving?
Having a few drinks at that summer barbecue? You may soon have to be even more careful before getting behind the wheel. This week, the National Transportation Safety Board voted on a recommendation that would lower the legal limit for drivers' blood alcohol level to 0.05, arguing it would significantly reduce the drunk driving-related deaths reported each year. In Virginia and DC, along with all other states, the legal limit is now 0.08 — the equivalent, for a 180 pound man, of around four 12 oz beers in an hour, according to this blood alcohol content (BAC) calculator. A limit of 0.05 would hold a 180 pound man to fewer than three beers an hour before he gets behind the wheel; a 140 pound woman would be just over the limit after consuming…

Orb, the Kentucky Derby winner, finished fourth.
Oxbow, a 15-1 longshot, went nearly wire-to-wire to win the 138th Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday giving trainer D. Wayne Lukas the all-time lead in Triple Crown race victories with 14. The bay colt, ridden by 50-year old Gary Stevens and owned by Calumet Farm, took the lead early from Goldencents and won the $1 million Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown by 1 ¾ lengths holding off Itsmyluckyday and Mylute in 1:57.54. Oxbow also ended hopes for a Triple Crown winner for another year. Orb, the winner of the Kentucky Derby, never got started from his No. 1 post position and finished a disappointing fourth. "I get paid to spoil dreams," Lukas said after the race. "You can’t mail it in, it’s a different surface, a different …

Plus, saving the sparrows in this week's roundup of weird news.
Editor's Note: Patch has 31 sites in Virginia and D.C., and not a day goes by that something weird isn't happening in at least one of them. Here's a look back at some weird goings on over the past week. Weird Virginia/DC usually runs on Patch sites every Saturday. A West Potomac High School student wanted to ask his date to the prom in grand style. That's why he rode in on a horse. Senior Ian Thompson rented a horse, and with a bouquet of red roses, rode to sophomore Nikki Amico's house and asked her to the prom. Thompson said he had a few ideas on how to ask Amico but they were quite expensive. The "prom-posal" was the first time he had ever ridden a horse. She said yes, by the way. In other animal news, check out this sweet story from…
The film, showing in Georgetown, is rated PG-13.
Star Trek Into Darkness has opened in theaters nationwide. Here are the showtimes at the movie theaters showing Star Trek Into Darkness in Georgetown: ----- REVIEW Boy, this is going to be one short review. This movie has more spoilers than the 1967 Enterprise had Tribbles…and in the interest of full disclosure, this is written by the Cinema Siren who owns chairs from the Voyager show, can list the original episodes in order of appearance, has a T-shirt with a quote in Klingon, and a model of the Enterprise signed by all the original cast members. That is to say, fandom lives here. Any experience of watching the new release by director J. J. Abrams would naturally be filtered through a brain steeped in Star Trek knowledge and lore. That…

Why can't liberals make an argument without resorting to name calling? I'm not saying that the state is currently paying for abortion outside of those circumstances. My point is, whether it's discussed at the state or federal level, taxpayer funding always comes up in the discussion and has for a VERY long time. http://articles.wdbj7.com/2013-04-04/abortions_38286436 Not a "complete idiot"....   more ›
