Parents Call Out Chancellor Over Reduced Arts Funding

Email letter asks parents to invite Chancellor Kaya Henderson to the Fillmore Arts Center spring art show

Parents continue to pressure D.C. Schools Chancellor Kaya Henderson to reverse cuts proposed in her FY 2014 budget that will leave the Fillmore Arts Center, 1819 35th St. NW, with as many students as the 2011-2012 year, but with $300,000 less in funding for staffing and supplies. Fillmore provides art and music education to children at eight DC public schools. As Patch previously reported, Principal Katherine Latterner created a new budget for the school that would require her to replace four full-time teaching positions with part-time hourly positions. Since the cuts were first announced, more than 1,000 people have signed a petition that urges Henderson to restore Fillmore Funding. Read: Fillmore Arts Center Faces Funding Cuts In an …

Bike to School Day Coming Wednesday

Be on the lookout as students in Northwest DC and across the country ditch four wheels for two.

Thousands of kids across the country will be biking to school Wednesday as part of the second annual National Bike to School Day. Seventeen DC schools have signed up to participate, according to the National Center for Safe Routes to School, which is organizing the event.  See the full list of schools participating here. Neither Stoddert nor Hyde-Addison are listed, though Patch knows children at these schools regularly ride their bikes to school. NCSRS also sponsors International Walk to School Day each October. Wednesday’s weather is a little bit iffy — temperatures will climb to the upper 60s, but there’s a 40 percent chance of rain. Friday is National Bike to Work Day—stick with Patch for more information on that later this week.  How …

'Pie in the Face' for Glover Park Teacher (Video)

Steve Dingledine, a fifth-grade teacher at Stoddert Elementary, continued this messy tradition

Steve Dingledine, a fifth-grade teacher at Stoddert Elementary, got creamed — chocolate cream to be precise — Thursday afternoon on the school playground. It was the fourth annual Pie in the Face day event.  Two sisters baked their own pies — one chocolate and one cherry pie — and promptly shoved them in Dingledine's face to the delight of their schoolmates. Dingledine participates in this sweet and sticky tradition each year as part of a "thank you" to students who have just finished days of standardized testing under the District of Columbia Comprehensive assessment System. The honor of throwing a pie in his face is a prize auctioned each year at the PTA's annual Big Chili fundraiser.  Fellow fifth-grade teacher Craig Duff led students …

The Band and Drill team of the Norwegian King’s Guard performed on the Stoddert Elementary field in Glover Park Tuesday.

One of only three performances by the Band and Drill team of the Norwegian King’s Guard during their current visit to the U.S. happened Tuesday right in Glover Park at Stoddert Elementary. A slight drizzle could not deter the 120-member King’s Guard as they performed a range of routines in full dress uniform on the Stoddert baseball field on Calvert Street, NW. One of the Stoddert fifth-grade classes is partnered with the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Washington, D.C. as part of the Embassy Adoption Program. The King's Guard was in the D.C. area because of its participation in the Virginia International Tattoo—a military musical display—in Norfolk, Va. last week. The King's Guard in responsible for the safety of the Norwegian royal family. …
