Final Georgetown ANC Redistricting Proposal Submitted to Council Subcommittee

Commissioner Tom Birch released his proposal for new boundaries and an additional single member district for Georgetown Thursday.

Commissioner Tom Birch issued his proposal for advisory neighborhood commission redistricting for Georgetown's ANC2E Thursday. He adjusted the proposal offered by the Georgetown redistricting task force's co-chairs, creating single member districts that were more closely in line with the ideal size of 2,000 residents per. In so doing, several Georgetown University dorms that would have been moved to student representation will now remain in non-student SMDs. Students Speak, Sticka called on Birch to consider his proposal. "I urge Commissioner Birch to consider asking the ANC 2E working group to produce a new plan, which conforms to DC's redistricting code and which better addresses the needs of every resident of …

Students Push Back After ANC Redistricting Vote

A plan proposed by the ANC Redistricting co-chairs would create one extra student district, but students wanted two.

A committtee of Georgetown community members voted nine to six in support of an Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) redistricting plan that would create an additional single member district (SMD) assigned to Georgetown University students. However, students would have preferred a plan that proposed two additional SMDs to better represent a large student population in the neighborhood. ANC Commissioner and Georgetown University student, Jake Sticka, wrote a piece in Greater Greater Washington in which he challenges the fairness and motives of the winning proposal, made by committee co-chairs Ron Lewis, Jennifer Altemus and Lenore Rubino. The three co-chairs also happen to be among the leaders of the neighborhood opposition to the …

The students are a valuable part of any neighborhood and typically live in the area for 4 years or more. They are major consumers of transit, restaurants, shops, housing rentals, and services etc...if it were not for them, Georgetown would be a rather fading and aging area of NW... They deserve representation, even one seat, so that they have a voice in issues that would directly impact them. …   more ›
