Glover Park ANC Slate Finalized

The deadline to submit petitions was Aug. 8.

The Glover Park Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC3B) candidate list is now complete. Five candidates submitted petitions to the Board of Election and Ethics (BOEE) in time to meet the Aug. 8 deadline. Each is running unopposed. Three of the five candidates are current sitting members of the ANC. The newcomers are Mary Young, who is running for single member district number four, and Joe Fiorillo, who is running for the seat once held by his late wife Cathy and currently held by Ben Thielen. Thielen is not seeking reelection for SMD01. Commissioner Howie Kreitzman, who represented the Cathedral Heights neighborhood of SMD04, resigned in July because of a planned moved to New York. No other candidates will appear on the ballot. A write-…

Stop Signs, Crosswalks Coming to 37th and Tunlaw

Changes at intersection meant to address community concerns about pedestrian safety.

Responding to concerns raised by an active group of 37th Street residents and the Advisory Neighborhood Commission, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) said it plans to put new stop signs, crosswalks and other street reconfigurations along stretches of 37th Street and Tunlaw Road. The changes are party of the ongoing Wisconsin Avenue Streetscape Project. At a public meeting Thursday, DDOT officials offerd a glimpse of the proposed street reconfigurations for 37th Street south of Wisconsin Avenue and for Tunlaw Road south of Calvert Street. Community members have raised concerns over the past several months about the streetscape project on Wisconsin Avenue, which they fear will result in increased cut-through traffic on 37th …

Neighbors Worry About Impact of Glover Park Streetscape Project

Initial stages of construction began April 2 and construction is expected to continue through September.

A plan to widen sidewalks, create a center median and reduce the number of traffic lanes on Wisconsin Avenue in the name of pedestrian safety has set the Glover Park neighborhood listserv "on fire" over the last month. Concerns include traffic, the effect on side streets and a perceived lack of public input.  A meeting on the Glover Park Streetscape project last Tuesday brought out nearly 100 people who wanted answers from District Department of Transportation (DDOT), Office of Planning (OP) and Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) officials. The project will reduce the number of traffic lanes from three to two during peak hours and from two to one during off-peak hours. Certain intersections will have left turn lanes. A center, painted …

If by regulated you mean censored that's not a good idea. You just personally attacked a couple of people yourself while complaining about them. Why the double standards? I live in Burleith but regularly reads the neighboring listservs. It's shocking that a GP ANC commissioner would make claims about pedestrian deaths to our Georgetown ANC when it's not true. I hope our ANC will do something …   more ›

Candidate Sekou Biddle Campaigning for Change on the District Council

Biddle, a candidate for the at-large District Council seat, says he would 'abolish' controversial constituent service funds.

Sekou Biddle is once again campaigning for the at-large seat on the District Council, after being ousted from his interim seat in the April 26, 2011 special election. He lost that race to Vincent Orange, partially because Biddle was unable to shake the perception that he was part of the problem in floundering Gray administration. Orange garnered 28.9 percent of the vote with a mere 10 percent of registered voters voting. Biddle stopped by the Glover Park ANC meeting last week to share his goals for the District and to answer questions from residents. He said his three areas of focus are: Education, Jobs and Employment, and Leadership. Biddle said he is increasingly concerned about the significant racial and economic gap in D.C. Public …

Metro Officials Reverse Decision on N2 Bus Route

Officials will fix unpopular bus route changes that were made without community input.

Updated: Metro has agreed to reinstate the recently changed N2 route.  Though Metro officials did not seek community input before making changes to the N2 bus line, they certainly received plenty of feedback at the Glover Park ANC meeting Thursday. In September, Metro changed the N2 bus route so that it no longer makes a stop at the Tenleytown metro station. The N2 route is now almost identical to the N4 route except for a detour from Massachusetts Avenue along Nebraska, New Mexico and Cathedral Avenues. In a press release issued 10 days before the new routes went into effect, metro stated, "The changes are intended to enhance reliability, improve connections with Metrorail service and match ridership demand."  Glover Park residents couldn…

Georgetown ANC 'Endorses' Glover Park Streetscape Plan

Commissioners sought clarification and assurances about the plan, which adjusts the number of traffic lanes and widens sidewalks, among other changes.

Georgetown's Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) hosted District Department of Transportation (DDOT) officials and Glover Park ANC representatives to discuss the upcoming Glover Park Streetscapes project at their monthly meeting Monday, Nov. 28. The proposed changes would reduce the number of lanes for traffic from three to two during peak hours and from two to one during non-peak hours; select intersections will have left turn lanes. A center median will take over the remaining space and will range in width between eight and nine feet depending on the overall width and curvature of Wisconsin Avenue and the presence of a left turn lane. Georgetown's commissioners raised concerns about the impact of the project on traffic both on …

If I undestand this correctly, to address "pedestrian concerns" they're going to reduce Wisconsin Avenue from 4 lanes to 2 and force all the traffic into residential neighborhoods. So instead of crawling through Wisconsin Avenue gridlock, traffic can now blow through 37th street which has only 1 stop sign compared to 4 traffic lights on Wisconsin Avenue. Brilliant! Commissioner Cohen is correct; …   more ›

Aesthetic and Safety Improvements Planned for Wisconsin Avenue in Glover Park

Wider sidewalks, enhanced pedestrian crossings, a reduced number of traffic lanes and a new center island are planned.

Plans put in motion in 2006 to improve the Glover Park Streetscape will soon be implemented to change the stretch of Wisconsin Avenue from Cathedral Avenue in the north to Whitehaven Parkway in the south. During peak hours there will be no street parking, creating two main lanes for traffic with a third lane for left turns at intersections. During …

I completely agree. This is going to be horrible with lots of traffic jams. I live near the Russian Embassy and traffic was backed up to Fulton St. until 8pm! This will crush any hopes of a quick trip to the store. At least you had the option to avoid left hand turners if possible. Now, they will just take away that lane for ever and definitely force traffic onto side streets to get around this …   more ›

Future of D1 and D2 Bus Service Now in WMATA's Hands

Residents of Georgetown and Glover Park have objected to proposed service cuts and schedule adjustments.

Two bus lines that service the Georgetown and Glover Park neighborhoods, the D1 (Glover Park-Federal Triangle) and D2 (Glover Park-Dupont Circle) routes are on metro's list of proposed bus changes. Both Georgetown's ANC2E and Glover Park's ANC3B passed resolutions opposing metro's plans to make service cuts and schedule adjustments. The deadline for public comment was Tuesday, Oct. 18, not it is up to Metro to further evaluate the proposal. Metro's proposal as it currently exists would widen the headway between the D1 buses from 8 minutes to 10 minutes during peak morning hours. This reduces the number of buses by one each hour. According to Metro's proposal, the D1 has an average of 517 daily riders and a 74 percent on-time performance …
