Mara Takes Georgetown, Glover Park, Bonds Wins DC

Anita Bonds wins the night and the DC Charter Amendment passes.

Georgetown and Glover Park voters favored Republican Patrick Mara, followed closely by Democrat Elissa Silverman in the special election, but interim Councilwoman Anita Bonds, also a Democrat, won the night in DC. Less than 10 percent of registered voters voted in the election, according to unofficial numbers. Bonds won in unofficial results with 32.19 percent of the District-wide vote, followed closely by Silverman with 27.55 percent and Mara with 22.79 percent. There were seven candidates on the ballot, six of whom were eligible for votes once Michael Brown bowed out. They were vying to fill the seat vacated when Councilman Phil Mendelson became Council Chairman. Bonds has been serving at the interim member of the District Council since …

Education, Parking and Zoning Dominate Georgetown Candidate Forum

Four of the seven candidates for the At-large seat on the District Council attended a forum in Georgetown Monday.

The race for the At-large seat on the District Council brought out four of the then seven candidates to Georgetown Monday to explain their (at times quite nuanced) differences on hot issues like parking, zoning and education. The special election April 23 will fill the At-large seat vacated by Phil Mendelson when he became the Council Chairman in November. Anita Bonds was selected in the interim to the position in December by the DC Democratic State Committee, of which she was the chairwoman at the time. Bonds was one of three candidates who did not attend the Georgetown Business Association's candidate forum Monday. Also missing were Elissa Silverman (D) and Michael Brown (D). Brown announced Tuesday night that he would be dropping out of…

Jack Evans Backs Anita Bonds in April Special Election

The April 23 special election will fill the At-large seat on the District Council vacated by now Chairman Phil Mendelson.

Ward 2 Councilman Jack Evans has endorsed Anita Bonds for the At-large seat on the DC Council, The Washington Post reports. Bonds is serving as the interim At-large councilwoman prior to the special election to permanently fill the seat on April 23. Evans told The Washington Post that Bonds is “best for the job." A media advisory from Bonds' office quotes a prepared statement from Evans in which he describes her as "tough but diplomatic, a doer not a talker." The seat was vacated when Phil Mendelson became the Council Chairman and Bonds was appointed to the position in December by the DC Democratic State Committee, of which she was the chairwoman at the time. Evans joins fellow councilmembers Marion Barry and Muriel Bowser in endorsing …

Special Election: Race for Signatures is On

Candidates need valid signatures from 3,000 District voters by Jan. 23 to appear on the April 23 ballot.

The 15 people who have picked up nominating petitions have until Jan. 23 to get enough signatures so their names appear on the April 23 special election ballot for the At-Large seat on the District Council. The election will fill the seat vacated by Phil Mendelson when he became Council Chairman in November. In December, Anita Bonds, chairwoman of the DC Democratic State Committee, was selected to serve as the interim at-large councilmember. In addition to Bonds, the list of potential candidates includes some familiar names from recent races, including A.J. Cooper, Patrick Mara, and Michael A. Brown. Cooper ran in the fall at-large race, which independent David Grosso won in November. Patrick Mara ran in last spring's special election, …

Anita Bonds to Serve as Interim At-large Member of DC Council

The DC Democratic State Committee selected Bonds, the party’s chairwoman.

Anita Bonds was selected by the DC Democratic State Committee, of which she is the chairwoman, to serve as the interim at-large councilmember until a special election April 23. The seat was vacated by Phil Mendelson when he officially became the council chairman in November. Bonds was an aide to former mayor and current councilman, Marion Barry. As the Washington City Paper reports: "The selection of Bonds, who works for Fort Myer Construction, means two of the Council's 13 members work for contractors that do significant business with the city; At-Large Councilmember David Catania works for M.C. Dean. Both outside jobs are entirely legal under the District's ethics rules." Candidates for the April primary could pick up nominating …
