Ash Wednesday begins the 40-day Lenten observation before Easter, which falls on March 31 this year. Georgetown churches are offering Ash Wednesday services throughout the day. Today: St. George's Episcopal Church will offer ashes, devotional books to all who wish to receive them.
In honor of Ash Wednesday, St. George's Episcopal Church is bringing "Ashes to Go" to the Virginia Square Metro station for morning and evening commuters. The church, which is about a block away, will have a presence at the Metro plaza at about 8:15 a.m., just after its morning service, and about 5 p.m., in advance of its evening service. Ashes will be offered to all who wish to receive them, according to a news release. Lenten devotional books also will be handed out to anyone who would like one. It's the first time the church has tried this, said the Rev. Sharon Sykes Williams, rector of St. George's Episcopal. The practice began in the Chicago area. Lent begins a 40-day period of penitence and observation prior to the Christian celebration of Easter.
Lent will begin on Feb. 22 this year, with Christians around the world fasting and receiving ashes on their foreheads. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the 40-day penitential Lenten season before the Christian holiday of Easter. The practice of applying ashes is an ancient one, found in the Old Testament, according to a press release from the Archdiocese of Washington. Fat Tuesday has come and gone. After the customary sightings of purple, gold, and green that are indicative of Mardi Gras festivals, today marks the start of Ash Wednesday and the Lenten season for many. For Christians this day signifies the beginning of the 40-day Lenten season prior to Easter. Widely known for the practices of abstaining from particular objects or practices from chocolate and sodas to smoking for repentance. Ash Wednesday is celebrated throughout the world. The name Ash Wednesday comes from the common custom of imposing ashes upon the foreheads of people attending masses and services of worship.
