Georgetown Intersections, Corridors Rank High for Bicycle Crashes

Data from 2008-2010 ranks one M Street intersections in the top 10 for frequency of crashes.

Crash data from 2008-2010 released by the District Department of Transportation adds numerical support for what many DC area cyclists already know: biking in the city can be dangerous. Georgetown is no exception. Local blog The Wash Cycle recently shared the DDOT data online. Read that report here. While the increasingly popular 14th Street corridor boasts the lion's share of the top 10 most crash-prone intersections, Georgetown's M and 31st Streets intersection is in a four-way tie for ninth place. When you look at Georgetown's major transportation corridors, namely M Street and Wisconsin Avenue, the crash numbers are more stark. I drive through Georgetown regularly, for years, and I can count on one hand the number of bikers I see follow the laws. In particular the lack of acknowledgment for the stop signs. They fly through, often right as I am stopping for them. Bikers, sorry, but you actually have laws you need to follow. I get infuriated at bikers more than I do car drivers now in Georgetown. That says something given…   more ›

Updated: No Bike Rodeo for Glover Park

Organizers were measuring interest in a day of family-friendly bike education in nearby Glover Park.

Updated Feb. 23 Mitch Wander, had hoped to organize a bike rodeo for this spring, but it looks like the event will have to wait for a later date. "Given limited time to promote the event and obtain sufficient advance commitments from attendees, there is not enough interest to have a Bike Rodeo at Guy Mason in the spring. We'll keep it in mind for some time in the future" wrote Wander in an email to Patch. Original Post Grab your helmet, secure those training wheels and come on down to the rodeo! Glover Park residents are measuring interest in having a bike rodeo at the Guy Mason Recreation Center this spring. Proposed dates include: Apr. 28 (Saturday), Apr. 29 (Sunday), May 5 (Saturday) and May 6 (Sunday). A bike rodeo is a day of fun and …

Stoddert Students Learn the Rules of the Road

The Washington Area Bicycle Association gave safety and riding tutorials to Stoddert Elementary students last week.

Stoddert students learned their A, B, C's when they took bike and pedestrian safety classes last week during their physical education class thanks to the Washington Area Bicycle Association (WABA) and the District Department of Transportation (DDOT). But ABC has a whole new meaning now: Air, Brakes, and Chain. The classes were part of the safe routes to school (SRTS) program, which aims to: Students watched an informative video and then WABA's Dupree Heard taught them important rules of the road. He went over how to properly wear a helmet and how to signal for turns or stops while riding. He taught students to check the air, breaks and chain on their bikes before even getting on. Next up, the students lined up to put on helmets and get …

Bike Safety Proponents Make Their Case for New Legislation

The District Council heard testimony Wednesday on the Assault of Bicyclist Prevention Act.

Cyclists and bicycle advocates testified about the importance of stricter legal protections for bikers in the increasingly bike-heavy streets of the District. Council members Tommy Wells and Ward 2's Jack Evans, along with several other members, co-introduced Assault of Bicyclist Prevention Act in September to protect cyclists against harassment. TBD reports that cyclist Evan Wilder, whose bike helmet recorded his being struck by a pickup truck in August, testified at the hearing Wednesday. Wilder testified about the incident and his inability to bring the driver who hit him to justice. The U.S. attorney's office declined to take on the case as a criminal matter and Wilder testified that he could not afford to bring a civil case against …

That video was disturbing... The cyclist was 100% in the right (giving 3' to the parked cars), and the pickemup driver was 100% in the wrong. How the heck could police not ticket the pickemup driver for a) failure to yield and b) leaving the scene of an accident?   more ›

Bike Safety: A Georgetown Community Effort

It takes bikes, driver and pedestrians together to make transportation safe for all.

Nothing is more terrifying for a bicyclist than being trapped in rush hour traffic between a honking taxi and a distracted driver. Fortunately, there is a way for those who partake in all modes of transportation to maintain harmony on the road and to travel safely from Point A to Point B. “‘Don’t be a jerk’ is a rule that can pretty much apply universally,” said Topher Mathews, a blogger for Georgetown Metropolitan who routinely writes about local bike politics and is secretary of the Citizens Association of Georgetown. Of course, the situation is more nuanced than whether or not someone is a jerk, but common courtesy can go a long way toward keeping Georgetowners safe on the road, and the community has been increasingly accommodating of …

As a recently-converted bicycle commuter (about 4 times a week, between Georgetown and Judiciary Square), it has been interesting to change perspective and look at traffic from a different angle. While I have seen a few bikers who blow through stop signs or stop lights, the vast majority of those I have encountered stop at both. I have also seen plenty of pedestrians jaywalking and cars speeding …   more ›
