Space Available for Blue Plains Tour Wednesday

Tour open to Georgetown residents to learn about DC Water construction proposals for the waterfront area.

Georgetown area residents are invited to take a tour of the DC Water Blue Plains facility (5000 Overlook Ave. SW) and to learn more about the utility's proposal to construct combined sewer overflow tunnels below along the Potomac River near the Georgetown waterfront. The tour, at 10 a.m. Jan. 9, has limited space for residents. According to an email from Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner Jeff Jones: "A tour is offered to residents who reside within the boundaries of ANC2e (Georgetown, Hillandale and Burleith). Blue Plains Receives $104 million from Maryland for Wastewater Treatment Upgrades

The Bay Restoration Fund grant will go the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission

The Blue Plains Wastewater Treatment Plant in Southwest D.C. will receive an infusion of $104 million thanks to a grant from the Maryland Board of Public Works. The monies will go toward the $950 million nitrogen-removal program that D.C. Water recently broke ground on. The Blue Plains facility serves the District, Md. and Va. for a total of 726 square miles of coverage and has the capacity to treat 370 million gallons of wastewater a day. "Upgrades at the Blue Plains Wastewater Treatment Plant, the single largest point source of nitrogen to the Chesapeake Bay, are an essential part of our plan to clean up the Potomac River and the Bay,” said Governor O'Malley in a press release.
