The Georgetown Community Partnership is being created as part of the campus plan.
Students will have a seat at the table next to high-level university officials and neighborhood leaders when the Georgetown Community Partnership comes into being. The Georgetown Community Partnership (GCP) will be the primary mechanism for facilitating dicussion and solving problems that arise in the interaction between the community, the university and students. Georgetown student newspaper blog, Vox Populi, reported Tuesday that "administrators promised student representation on the steering committee and on other committees, indicating that there will be at least a handful of students in the conversation." Last week at the Advisory Neighborhood Commission Sept. 4 meeting, the ANC officially designated Commissioner Ron Lewis as the co-…

'The real work has just started.'
Georgetown University has begun the process of implementing its campus plan agreement by engaging with neighbors directly and incentivizing on-campus socializing by students. "We are off to a running start" said Lauralyn Lee, the associate vice president for community engagement and strategic initiatives in the Office of Community Engagement at GU. Lee and Todd Olson, the vice president for student affairs, addressed the Georgetown Advisory Neighborhood Commission at the Sept. 4 meeting. Lee said the University has engaged in conversations with comunity leaders to form the Georgetown Community Partnership (GCP), which she expects will formally launch in October. Mayor Vincent Gray praised CAG award-winner Ron Lewis for his role in the campus plan discussions
Mayor Vincent Gray hinted at a possible solution to the ongoing Georgetown University Campus Plan negotiations during the Citizens Association of Georgetown (CAG) annual meeting Wednesday. Gray was on-hand to recognize CAG's four award winners Wednesday and offered particular praise for Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner Ron Lewis. Lewis was honored with the Belin Award for distinguished service to the Georgetown community. "Last night we talked and [Lewis] said, 'I think we may be able to find a solution to this.' DeGioia: 'The names of hundreds of members of the Hoya family can send a message that we support strengthening Georgetown’s position as a world-class university.'
Two weeks before the final Zoning Commission hearing on the Georgetown University campus plan, University President Jack DeGioia called on alumni to show their support for the proposal to expand and grow their alma mater. In an email sent to graduates, DeGioia called the proposal one of "modest, targeted growth opportunities," a refrain offered by the university throughout the zoning commission hearings. The case he makes in the letter sounds much like what he might say at the Nov. 17 meeting and reflects the points made in a recent favorable Washington Post editorial. DeGioia boasts the economic contributions of the university and its hospital to the greater D.C. community. He also acknowledges "the concerns of our neighbors" and touts …

The University has rolled out several quality of life improvement programs since the new school year started.
As the sixth and final hearing on the Georgetown University Campus plan draws nearer, neighborhood associations continue to object to the proposed 2010-2020 plan for growth at GU. Since the school year began, the University has begun daily trash collections and is running a new shuttle to take students to and from the M Street entertainment district. GU is also paying for additional police presence in the surrounding community. These measures are aimed at addressing quality of life concerns raised by neighbors during the campus plan hearings. During a the Advisory Neighborhood Commission meeting Monday, Lenore Rubino, the president of the Burleith Citizens Association, asked Mayor Vincent Gray to remain strong in his support for neighbors…

I got a note left on my door from GU's Office of Off-Campus Student Life asking if they could drop by in person and meet with me about local concerns. Now that I've seen their attempt to bigfoot us with their alumni, their note to me sounds like they're just saying"nice doggie" while they reach for a rock.   more ›
