Mara Secures Most Donations from Georgetown

At-large DC Council candidate Patrick Mara snags the most monetary donations from Georgetown individuals and corporations.

Georgetown corporations and individuals are throwing their monetary support  behind DC Council at-large candidate Patrick Mara, according to the campaign finance reports from the Board of Elections and Ethics. “I have a lot of friends in Georgetown,” Mara told Patch. “I call, I’ve gone door to door…I’ve just been hauling around the city asking for donations.” Mara is one of six candidates running for the At-large seat on the District Council in a special election April 23. The seat was officially vacated by Phil Mendelson when he was elected Council Chairman in November. According to the most recent campaign finance information, Mara has received $5,850 from the Georgetown residents and $3,600 from local corporations toward his campaign …

The Ethics Board's Ethics Come into Question

The D.C. Council Committee on Government Operations held a public hearing on the (slow) formation of the Board of Ethics and Government on Tuesday.

Delays in the debut of the District of Columbia Board of Ethics and Government have some District residents concerned about the board’s own ethics.  The Board of Ethics and Government emerged after the D.C. council passed ethics reform last year. The board will have power to subpoena documents, conduct investigations on officials, punish unethical behavior and request financial disclosures that may reveal conflicts of interest between a politician and another individual or organization. As Councilwoman Muriel Bowser said in an oversight hearing Wednesday about the boards’ formation progress, the board will be the “chief sheriff” of ethics enforcement in the District of Columbia government. Ethics 101

Unethical politicians, and the ethics reforms they propose.

When a governing body such as the D.C. Council tackles ethics reform, it's a sign that lawmakers have failed the public trust. What's an elected representative to do? The obvious public relations fix is to pass a new set of laws. Brilliant. It doesn't matter what's contained in the ethics reform bill being proposed by D.C. Council Chair Kwame Brown and Mary Cheh. The simple fact that Brown faces serious campaign ethics violations makes this one of the most ridiculous attempts at legislation in recent memory. Thank goodness someone in the D.C. government has stood up to point out how silly it all looks. Attorney General Irvin Nathan deserves credit for going before the council and testifying how the Cheh/Brown bill falls way short. His …
