Severe Weather Expected Wednesday Evening

Rain, thunderstorms, small hail predicted across Northern Virginia and DC.

A line of thunderstorms is expected to move through Northern Virginia and DC during this evening’s commute. Forecasters expect rain and wind to pick up between 4 – 5 p.m. Wednesday. “Numerous showers and scattered thunderstorms are expected into this evening,” according to the National Weather Service. “Some storms will produce heavy rainfall…which may lead to flooding problems.” The Capital Weather Gang, however, predicts “as rainfall totals have generally been 1 inch or less from the recent rain, the ground isn’t yet saturated and widespread flooding is not anticipated” in the DC metro area. The National Weather Service also predicts small hail with this storm system. The rain and storms should move out of the area overnight, leaving …

Early spring-like temperatures predicted for the first week of April in Washington.

This week brings the 2013 peak bloom of the famous cherry blossom trees around the DC Tidal Basin, and the weather for most of this week will be nice for enjoying pink and white flowering trees.  The official estimated peak dates are April 3 - 6 (that's Wednesday through Saturday), according to the National Park Service.  Monday may be the nicest day of the week in terms of weather—a significant change from last Monday, when up to three inches of snow accumulated north and west of DC. Local forecasters say Monday will be partly cloudy with a high temperature of about 60 degrees. As the week goes on, temperatures will drop and the chances for rain will increase (see details below).  Overnight temperatures throughout the week will be in the …

This Week's Weather: Chance for Wintry Mix Monday, Clearing Midweek

Forecast Monday calls for snow before noon, then rain, snow, and sleet likely.

Expect a rocky start to the week with a possible wintry mix of snow, sleet or rain Monday that could make for longer commutes. Here's what the National Weather Service says to expect: Monday: Snow before noon, then rain, snow, and sleet likely. High near 40. East wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow and sleet accumulation of around an inch possible. The Capital Weather Gang says: "An early-to-mid morning wintry mix (60 percent chance) threatens that dusting in the city to a couple inches far north and west, and a generally lousy Monday morning commute." Tuesday: Showers likely before noon. Mostly sunny, with a high near 53. Breezy, with a northwest wind 9 to 14 mph increasing to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon. Chance …

Timeline: When Will Snow Hit DC?

The National Weather Service is predicting rain, then a wintry mix, then snow, a mix and snow again before this storm is over.

A winter storm is headed for Washington and to find out the latest timeline, Patch spoke Tuesday with meteorologist Calvin Meadows, who is with the Baltimore-Washington forecast office for the National Weather Service. Here's a timeline of what to expect, primarily for areas north and west of I-95, according to Meadows: A "rain-snow" line will determine which areas see more snow than others, Meadows said. "We're expecting the rain-snow line to kind of waiver back and forth over [Fairfax County]," said Meadows, "primarily west of I-95 and east of the Blue Ridge."  "Right now, the latest information indicates that west of 95, the best-case scenario, is 5 inches of snow in Fairfax County. The worst-case is 12 inches of snow." There will be …

This Week's Weather: Chance of 'Snowquester' Midweek?

Week will start out sunny, 45 degrees.

A sunny start to the week could turn quite wintry by midweek in DC, according to the National Weather Service. The Capital Weather Gang predicts a 70 percent chance of 1 inch of snow Tuesday night into Wednesday night, a 45 percent chance of 5 inches or more and a 10 percent chance of 10 inches or more. A Capital Weather Gang reader suggested the name "Snowquester" for the possible midweek winter storm, in honor of the financial sequester that has hit the federal government. The week starts out sunny though, with Monday expecting to see a high of 45 degrees and clear skies, according to NWS. Tuesday starts off with a 30 percent chance of rain, with a high of 45 degrees. Chances for precipitation increase throughout the day to 80 percent, …

Snow Possible for Washington Wednesday

DC weather forecast: Some computer models are showing snow in Georgetown mid-week.

This hasn't been a good winter for snow lovers in Washington, but it's not spring yet. And this week, DC could get its first really significant snow, some models are predicting. “This is the best looking snow threat in two years but there is way too much uncertainty in the forecast for this to be ‘in the bag,’ the Capital Weather Gang said late Friday. A European model run showed the potential for a snowstorm from Richmond to Philadelphia—including the DC metro area. The Weather Channel gives Wednesday a 70 percent chance of snow with a high temperature of 36 degrees. ABC7’s Doug Hill wrote Friday, “some models are showing the low pressure system forming into a storm that might threaten the midatlantic by midweek.  It is too soon to tell …

No danger of icy roads, with…

This Week's Weather: Light Snowfall Possible Monday, Tuesday Night

Temperatures will "warm up" into 40s by Wednesday.

The big chill in the DC area continues this week, through Tuesday night with highs in the 30s and a possibility for snow flurries Monday and Tuesday night, according to the National Weather Service. The series of brief snow showers experienced in the last few days are known as Alberta Clippers. Though they generate very little snow—no more than an inch of snow on any single day—drivers should use allow extra time for travel and use caution as roads may be more slippery than usual, according to DC Alerts. The DC Department of Public Works says it will  treat roads and conduct snow prowls as needed. Wind gusts up to 25 MPH will continue through Monday afternoon. The National Weather Service has issued a Small Craft Advisory for Monday until …

Weather: Deep Freeze to Hit Area Starting Tuesday

Snow or wintry mix in the forecast for Friday? Temperatures will stay below 40 degrees for a high until next Monday.

Like clockwork, the weather cooperated for the 57th presidential inauguration with sunny skies and temperatures in the 40s. After the parade down Pennsylvania Avenue, temperatures began to tumble. The metro area will likely see temperatures below freezing through Friday, according to the National Weather Service.  Highs on Tuesday through Thursday won't go above 27 degrees, according to the weather service. Sunny and cold DC will see sunny skies Tuesday, with only a high of 23 degrees and with blustery winds up to 30 MPH, it will feel even chillier. Wednesday will see much the same, sunny and cold with a high of 25 degrees, but not as windy. Thursday will also be sunny with the temperatures inching up a few degrees up to 27 degrees. Snow …
