A cold front moving into the DC area will bring showers and possible severe thunderstorms Wednesday evening.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a coastal flood advisory for the Potomac River adjacent to DC and Alexandria, Va. for Wednesday night. There is also a flash flood watch in effect starting at 3 p.m. for the District of Columbia. A cold front expected to move into the area will bring rain and possibly thunderstorms. NWS says the thunderstorms could produce damaging wind gusts and that urban areas will be more susceptible to flooding. The Capital Weather Gang at The Washington Post expects the heavy showers and possible thunder to roll through the area from west to east sometime between 8 p.m. Wednesday and 4 a.m. Thursday. After Winter Weather Advisory Monday morning, look for springlike temperatures in the 60s midweek, followed by highs in the 30s.
Mother Nature will deliver something of a weather smorgasbord to the DC area this week. The week starts off with a Winter Weather Advisory Monday morning. Freezing rain and sleet is expected to last during the morning commute Monday between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m., according to the National Weather Service. The worst of it should hit the area between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m., according to the Capital Weather Gang. Expect a high near 40 degrees Monday. Temperatures Monday night will not go below freezing, only dipping down to 37 degrees. Tuesday, springlike weather comes to DC, with partly sunny skies and a high of 56 degrees. Temperatures take a dip Tuesday.
The week will start out soggy in the DC metro area and likely continue that way through Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. Monday holds a 70 percent chance of rain, Tuesday a 30 percent chance and Wednesday a 70 percent chance, the weather service predicts. Monday's temperatures will remain unseasonably warm, with a high of 57 degrees. Temperatures are expected to take a dip beginning Tuesday with a high of 39 degrees. Wednesday temperatures warm up a bit to 45 degrees for the high. Forecasters say expect to see highs near 57 degrees Wednesday through Saturday, about 15 degrees above average for January.
Now that it's January, could DC see any snow anytime soon? For kids who love to sled and make snowmen (and maybe miss a day or two of school), the answer is no—not this week, at least. In fact, it's just the opposite.
