The Stoddert Elementary PTA will hold a backpack and school supply drive August 4.
Stoddert Elementary families are asked to contribute to a back-to-school drive Saturday, Aug. 4 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Stoddert Recreation Center gym. The PTA needs donations of time, supplies and money to help support families in need both within the Stoddert community and beyond. "As we prepare our children for school it is hard to think that another parent in our community may not have the financial resources to fully prepare their own children," the PTA wrote in an email to parents. School supplies, like backpacks, pencils, glue sticks, crayons and more are needed. See the PDF of suggested supplies. "All donations will first go to any Stoddert families that need back to school assistance and then to DC's Central Union Mission's …

Hyde-Addison Elementary, Stoddert Elementary and Hardy Middle all made gains in math since 2011, according to data released today by the Office of the State Superintendent of Education.
Students enrolled in D.C. public schools in the Georgetown area scored much higher on the most recent round of standardized testing than students in other parts of the city. Results from the 2012 Comprehensive Assessment System were released Thursday afternoon and show that less than half (49.3 percent) of public school students in the city are proficient in math and even fewer (45.6 percent) are proficient in reading, according to benchmarks set by the government. But students at Hyde-Addison Elementary, Stoddert Elementary and Hardy Middle scored much better than these citywide averages. In a press release, Mayor Vincent Gray's office highlighted the reading and math proficiency of third and fourth grade students throughout the city who …

She will serve for the 2012-2013 school year because Principal Dr. Marjorie Cuthbert is resigning.
Patricia Pride will serve as interim principal at Stoddert Elementary for the 2012-2013 school year, Chancellor Kaya Henderson announced in a letter to parents Thursday. The announcement comes two days after Henderson put a stop to the principal selection process already underway. Henderson wrote that the short period of time in which to find an appropriate candidate prompted her decision. Principal Dr. Marjorie Cuthbert announced June 21 that she would be leaving her role at Stoddert effective Aug. 3 to help care for the family of her deceased daughter in Wisconsin. The Stoddert community formed a selection committee to find Cuthbert's replacement two weeks ago. Henderson's decision to appoint an interim was unexpected. "We're obviously …

The Stoddert Elementary PTA will hold a special meeting Thursday at 6:30 to plan the principal search.
The Stoddert Elementary PTA will hold a special meeting Thursday at 6:30 p.m. to begin the principal selection process to replace Dr. Marjorie Cuthbert. Cuthbert announced last Thursday that she would resign from her role as principal effective Aug. 3. The meeting is open to all parents; those in attendance will elect three parents and one alternate to serve on the principal selection committee. At the special meeting, attendees will also select one non-parent community representative to serve on the committee. "Under DCPS guidelines, a panel of teachers, staff, certain PTA executives, parents and community members will interview and make recommendations on filling the vacant principal position" according to a post on the PTA website. If …

The third annual event celebrates fresh, local produce
Students across D.C. public schools, including Hyde-Addison in Georgetown, enjoyed lunches and activities that featured fresh, local strawberries and salad greens Wednesday. This is the third year for the event that hopes to prove that students will eat healthy foods if they are selected carefully and taste good. Council member Mary Cheh spoke to a gym full of students at Maury Elementary on Capitol Hill Wednesday, calling their school a "model" for DCPS when it came to fitness and healthy eating. "What we would like is for all the other school to be like you," said Cheh. Maury hosts family activity nights featuring yoga and other exercises. They also have running clubs that run during lunch and after school around nearby Lincoln Park. …

The Georgetown school won a $3,500 grant from Loews to start a student-run vegetable garden.
Hardy Middle School sixth-graders got their hands dirty Wednesday and they didn't have to go downtown to the Thompson Building to do it. Thanks to a $3,500 grant from Loews, funds raised through a Sock Hop dance and the time donated by parents and teachers, Hardy Middle School has its very own fledgling community garden. Students planted tomato, pepper and other seeds in newly constructed plots on the school's grounds. "Learning doesn't happen just inside four walls of the classroom," science teacher Britni Whitty told her class of 20-some odd students. The vegetable garden follows on the heels of a wetland area created last fall. Through the District Department of the Environment, Hardy received a grant to build a new wetlands area in a …

With healthier food items, more students are choosing cafeteria meals.
Food in D.C. Public Schools (DCPS) has changed. Local apples appear on trays. International food days introduce children to a range of cuisine from Nordic to Panamanian. Cafeteria workers are making lasagna from scratch. The tray no longer includes a strawberry milk with as much sugar as a soda. For many, this is proof that the revolution is at hand. “I can say that we make lasagna in all the Chartwells kitchens and the cafeteria ladies love making lasagna and the kids love eating it. And I definitely think there’s a connection,” said Jeff Mills, the food services director for DCPS. Chartwells, the food vendor that manages operations for most of DCPS, has been under intense pressure and scrutiny from Mills to provide fewer processed foods …

Non-profit 826DC supports D.C. students with their writing and offers curriculum assistance to help teachers inspire kids to write.
Though 826DC is a relatively new non-profit, the organization has quickly established Georgetown connections — from working with students at the Duke Ellington Schoool of the Arts and Wilson High School to forging a partnership with Georgetown University's Lannan Center for Poetics and Social Practice. The organization, which works with kids ages six to 18, has expanded from working with six schools in its first year to working with with more than 30 schools and impacting nearly 2,000 students this school year. The non-profit first started in 2008 under the name Capitol Letters Writing Center and re-opened as 826DC in October 2010. Their mission is simple: "supporting students ages 6-18 with their creative and expository writing skills, …

The pre-k lottery system for D.C. Public Schools left children from both neighborhoods waitlisted.
A total of 31 children who live in Georgetown, Burleith and Glover Park may not be able to attend pre-Kindergarten at their neighborhood schools, Hyde-Addison and Stoddert Elementary. Nearly 60 in-boundary children were admitted to the pre-K program between the two schools. But that means, between Stoddert and Hyde-Addison, DCPS is only meeting 65 percent of the local demand. At both local elementary schools, the pre-K classes will be filled entirely by children who live in-boundary for Hyde-Addison and Stoddert. At Stoddert, the 38 available pre-K slots were all filled by in-boundary children and another 17 in-boundary children are on the wait list. Following the lead of the previous year, Hyde only admitted one pre-K class — instead of …
