Councilmember Mary Cheh last week proposed expanding circulator service to Glover Park and the National Cathedral, among other areas of the District, and would pay for the service by increasing fares in some cases by double. In Cheh’s committee budget, she also proposes expanding the Circulator to the National Mall, U Street, and the neighborhoods surrounding Howard University. Funding for these expansions would rely on an increase in the Circulator fare, effective July 1, 2014 in Cheh's proposal. The Washington Post reports that passengers could be paying as much as double the current fare: "Cheh (D-Ward 3), in her capacity as chair of the council’s transportation committee, is proposing to double the Circulator fare to $2 for riders …

Premium transit options include two streetcars and one premium bus line between Union Station and Georgetown.
Two possible streetcar lines and one premium bus line are among the three alternatives offered by the District Department of Tranporation (DDOT) for transit between Union Station and Georgetown. All three lines assume that a dedicated K Street Transitway will be built to allow a bus or streetcar to move without the hindrance of other traffic. DDOT staff have developed three proposed routes and are seeking feedback on the public's preferences to inform their future decision-making. There will be another public hearing in May after which DDOT select recommended alternatives. In his most recent budget, Mayor Vincent Gray has set aside $400 million —including the cost of streetcars— to make a route between Union Station and Georgetown a …

In that case, it would replace some of the shopping trips that we currently drive for.   more ›
