Metro announced Thursday plans to accelerate repairs and replacements of area metro escalators.

Metro will bring on additional outside help to service and repair escalators and plans to accelerate current efforts to replace escalators at the Foggy Bottom and Dupont Circle stations, according to a news release. Metro will release a request for proposals later this week to contract additional personnel to service Virginia metro stations, including the new line to Dulles “While we have made progress towards our maintenance compliance goals and improving the quality of repairs, we need to expand our efforts to give customers the safe and reliable escalators they deserve,” said Metro General Manager and Chief Executive Officer Richard Sarles in a statement Thursday. “Simply put, we need more people power to catch up and recover from years…

For three days this week, both elevator and escalator service were simultaneously unavailable at Dupont Circle's north entrance. Metro personnel at the site did nothing to alert people to this, and people who had already gone through the ticket turnstile had to spend more money just to go back in and get to the south entrance. It was particularly hard on elderly and disabled customers, as the …   more ›
