District agencies respond to expected high temperatures.
The mini heat wave hitting the District this week means a few changes for Georgetowners' daily summer routines: trash will be collected earlier and pools will stay open later. The Department of Public Works (DPW) will start trash collection at 6 a.m. for the remainder of the week in anticipation of high temperatures during normal service hours. Starting work an hour earlier helps crews avoid health or environmental issues on days when the temperature and heat index are predicted to be above 90 degrees, according to a press release from DPW. Trash may be placed on the curb starting at 6 p.m. the day before collection. Trash and recycling containers have to be removed by 8 p.m. on collection day. Georgetown's 20007 Zip Code will not be immune to the heat hitting the entire DC region
Updated June 29 10:25 a.m. DC has issued a hyperthermia alert for Friday. Just before 10:15 a.m. the heat index reached 101. Original Post Late June in Georgetown will feel like late August this weekend as temperatures reach the upper 90s in the DC region Thursday through Monday. The high temperature will be 93 with sun on Thursday. Temperatures will climb to 98 Friday, 99 Saturday and 101 Sunday. Temperatures will drop back to 96 Monday and 92 Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service extended forecast. Jelleff will be open until 8:30 p.m. and Volta Park and Francis until 9:30 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays.
The Department of Parks and Recreation is doing its part to help residents cool down during days of extreme heat: pool hours at select pools have been extended for Thursday and Friday. In Ward 2, the Jelleff pool will be open until 8:30 p.m. and both Francis and Volta Park pools will be open until 9:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Pools throughout the city will still follow their regularly scheduled closed days. Jelleff and Volta Park will both remain open later than usual tonight.
As District residents push through one of the harsher heat waves this summer D.C. agencies are making accomodations to provide cool places to stay out of the high temperatures and poor air quality. To help residents beat the heat, the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) will extend the hours of the following outdoor pools in Ward 2.
