Georgetown: Consignment/Resale Clothing Hub?

Two new consignment/resale clothing stores opened this fall bringing the total to five in ten square blocks.

Georgetown is an epicenter is D.C. for shopping, historic homes and  dining...but consignment and resale stores?  In the past year, two new consignment/resale stores have opened in Georgetown, joining existing resale shops. Why this rise in eco-friendly, high quality and value-focused clothing shopping in Georgetown? Who are their customers? Who consigns at these stores? Georgetown Patch talked with the owners and managers of Annie Creamcheese, Ella-Rue, Second Hand Rose, Second Time Around and Tari to understand this trend and learn more about the business of consignment and resale. Annie Creamcheese You cannot ignore the fun windows and vibe of Annie Creamcheese, located on M Street between Potomac and 33rd Streets. I caught up with …

Shopping by Swapping at Proper Topper

Fashionistas enjoy a lovely afternoon outdoors swapping stylish apparel.

After much anticipation, Proper Topper hosted its first-ever Fashion Swap yesterday afternoon. I half-expected to be mobbed by a throng of women rummaging through clothing racks, and, accordingly, prepared to be on the defense, but was pleasantly surprised at the polite exchanges, and even helpful suggestions from fellow swappers. Anna Fuhrman, owner of Proper Topper, said that most of the store's merchandise will be significantly marked down through October, and some items--heavy items, like tables, cabinets and mirrors--will be reduced up to 90 percent. As reported in an earlier Patch story, Proper Topper will close at the end of October. Anna is still looking for a location, but Glover Park has shown an interest in having her store move…

A Taste of Fashion in Georgetown

Designer Fashion Preview brings in customers and helps a good cause.

The scene at the George Town Club last Thursday was reminiscent of an exclusive Lady's club. Fashionable women sat at tables sipping red and white wines and snacking on passed hors d'oeuvres while previewing looks from American designer Eileen Fisher's Fall 2010 and Resort 2010 collections. The event was a collaboration between long-time shop, The Phoenix, and Eileen Fisher, whose clothes have been sold in the store for more than 20 years.  Guests were invited to preview Eileen Fisher's clothes and place advanced orders with the store as well as purchase jewelry designs from a local designer. A portion of the proceeds from the event benefited Girls Incorporated, an advocacy group dedicated to raising the voices of young girls on issues of …

Couture Show Wraps up DC Fashion Week 2010

French Embassy hosts high fashion event for D.C. residents with an eye for design.

Long the ugly duckling of the fashion world, Washington, D.C. has more recently been described by many in the fashion world as the next fashion capital of the country. Nowhere was that more apparent than at the International Couture show Sunday evening at the Embassy of France. The show marked the finale of DC Fashion Week 2010, which was Sept. 20-26. Models strutted down the runway in military-inspired trenches and tops as well as knitted dresses in bright colors and nude-inspired hues. Black clothing dominated the runway, previewing the season's go-to color in everything from gowns to cocktail dresses. Designers from all over the world including Guinea, the Ukraine and South America were represented.  "The show was great! There were …

Designer Prepares for Benefit Show

Show to benefit those with autism

Models, stylists and photographers all responded to a casting call and fitting Thursday at the Latham Hotel in Georgetown, for an event to benefit autism.  Models walked the carpet in designs by internationally renowned clothing designer Edwing D'Angelo, whose fall collection will be featured in the Fashion for Autism event Friday at City Tavern Club on M St. This event follows the Fashion for Autism event in New York on Sept. 18, which also featured designs by D'Angelo and is the first time that a Fashion for Autism fundraiser is being featured in Washington, D.C. Hand selecting pieces from his newest collection, D'Angelo personally styled each male model in a light tailored suit or button-down with shorts, while outfitting female models …

Georgetown Gatherings and Goings-On Sept. 23-25

There's always something to do in Georgetown. Here are my top picks for the weekend.

Well, Georgetown, fall is upon us. Despite the heat the latter part of this week, the weekend is ripe for cooler temperatures, sleeping with your bedroom windows open (unless you live on the ground floor, then don't), and enjoying the festivals of fall. There are so many things to do this weekend, you will have to check our calendar to see them all, but here are my picks for a weekend well-spent in the neighborhood. Friday evening, you can take two routes: fashion or family. For fashion, head to the Fashion for Autism event at the City Tavern Club. Check out the very latest fashions from New York's Fashion Week right here in D.C. Local celebrities including both a current and former Miss D.C. will be on hand to set the tone for the evening…

District Sample Sale: On Your Marks, Get Set...

At the District Sample Sale, you will meet designers and vendors, try before you by, sip champagne and get deep discounts. This beats shopping online any day.

If last year's line was any indication, the District Sample Sale is one of the biggest shopping events of the season. Women queue up for opportunities to shop, compete, enjoy bubbly and help a charity in the process. It looks like this year's sale will not disappoint: As of Monday, a few general admissions tickets ($40) remained, but benefactress ($250) could not be had and the VIP tickets ($100) sold out in one week. Now Wednesday, tickets cannot be had without begging, borrowing or stealing. In total 24 stores and 8 restaurants will make your discount shopping experience delightful. Well, you and the other 699 women vying for designer wares. This good cause on Sept. 16. benefits the George Washington University Hospital Mammovan. The …
