Where to Buy Dorm Room Supplies in Georgetown

You won't find a Walmart nearby, but there are several local shops close to Georgetown to outfit your new dorm room.

Back-to-school season is just around the corner. For younger students, that means buying new pens and pencils, a trendy lunchbox and perfect first day of school duds. For students headed to college, back-to-school shopping is a whole different ballgame. Collegians need to be outfitted with everything from extra-long twin sheets and a mini-fridge to flip flops for the community shower to futons. We've set up this guide for incoming Georgetown University and George Washington University students. You won't find a Walmart in our quaint corner of Washington, but we have several smaller stores where you can stock up on essentials.

'Rush Plus' expands service during rush hour

Metro rolls out its new rush hour program, "Rush Plus," today during rush hours on the Green, Yellow, Blue and Orange lines. Rush Plus "is designed to ease crowding, improve the commuting experience for Metrorail riders on the Orange, Blue, Green and Yellow lines, and prepare for the future Silver Line," according to the metro press release about the changes. Expanded service will result in 18 new Orange Line trains during rush hour. The increased service will impact 21 stations, to include Foggy Bottom and Rosslyn. Foggy Bottom Metro has a history of flooding issues.

Metro is planning for this weekend’s expected pass of Hurricane Irene and the winds and rain that may accompany it late Saturday and into Sunday morning. Metro is taking steps in advance to prevent service disruptions. Specifically: “We’re putting all of our resources in place to address any issues that arise out of the extreme weather conditions this weekend,” said Metro General Manager and CEO Richard Sarles. “We will be updating our customers through our website, Twitter, email alerts and the media.” Metro maintenance personnel have delivered more than 2,000 sandbags at stations that historically have had water flow above the curb, down the escalators into stations. The list of stations includes Cleveland Park, King Street, Southern …
