More Meetings: A Resolution to Town-Gown Conflicts?

Zoning Commisioner says Georgetown should follow AU, Howard model of liasion committees, community meetings to resolve issues

The Zoning Commission wants Georgetown University and the surrounding community to address their town-gown conflicts in a productive arena, namely outside the Campus Plan process and the commission's hearing room at 441 4th St., NW. Zoning Commission Chairman Anthony Hood has consistently pushed for Georgetown University and members of the Georgetown community to regularly discuss the impacts the school and its students have on the surrounding neighborhoods as more effective way to find common ground on those issues. No Decision on Georgetown Campus Plan

The Zoning Commission postponed any decision-making until a May 10 meeting, pending supplemental information from the university.

The Zoning Commission decided not to decide anything Thursday, during what was to have been the final meeting on the Georgetown University Campus Plan.  The commissioners generally agreed that students living off-campus have had a demonstrated, negative impact on the quality of life for neighbors. They also agreed that they would like to see enhanced efforts by the university to address those issues and evidence that their solutions are working. At the conclusion of the public discussion Thursday, the commissioners offered a laundry list of requests for more information on the university's efforts to manage off-campus student life. Those filings are due in April and the commission scheduled another public meeting for May 10. The evening …

Decision Time for Georgetown Campus Plan

The Zoning Commission will deliberate and vote on the 10-year campus plan at a public meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 9.

Have University efforts like the M Street Shuttle, SNAP patrols and trash collection sufficiently addressed community concerns in the eyes of the Zoning Commission? After a year of hearings, both sides will learn the answers to these and other questions as the Zoning Commission meets Thursday, Feb. 9. The commission will decide if Georgetown can expand its student population and campus as proposed in the university's 10-year campus plan, or if neighbors have presented a sufficient case against the plan. "We need to learn how to co-exist and hopefully that’s what we’re going to achieve...it’s not going to be easy," …
