Michaels Craft Store, T.J. Maxx Among Rumored Mall Tenants

Georgetown Park Mall has yet to announce any new tenants.

The Georgetown Park Mall continues to generate interest among larger retailers, but Vornado Realty Trust has yet to announce any new tenants. Rumored  potential tenants include Bloomingdale's, Lord & Taylor, T.J. Maxx and Michaels, according to The Washington Post. Bloomingdale's had previously expressed interest in opening a "Soho Concept" store in Georgetown prior to the mall's public auction several years ago that brought in Vornado Realty Trust and Angelo, Gordon & Co. Ward 2 Councilman Jack Evans told The Post that Bloomingdale's would not require a tax incentive to come to Georgetown. “They were excited about going to Georgetown Park and didn’t need TIF money,” Evans told the Post. Most of the shops on the mall's interior have been …

New Wisconsin Avenue Streetlights, An Improvement?

The new Washington Globe streetlights replace 'cobra' lights on Wisconsin Avenue

Gone are the highway-esque "cobra" style lights of Wisconsin Avenue in Glover Park and in their stead are new Washington Globe lights. The lights are just one element of the Glover Park Wisconsin Avenue Project to upgrade the streetscape and change the lane configuration. Local blog 73rd & Walnut posted photos of the new streetlights. "First off, let me tell you that they are beautiful. Shiny and black," wrote Adriana Cordero. But Cordero admitted she was "puzzled" by the placement of one such new light (in the middle of the sidewalk, blocking pedestrians) and the size (they are as tall as the lights they replaced). The Glover Park Streetscape Project will widen sidewalks, create a center median and reduce the number of traffic lanes on …

GSA Delays Auction of West Heating Plant

The auction will take place in the fall, instead of this summer.

The EBay-style auction of the West Heating Plant — the federal property on 29th Street just north of K Street in Georgetown — has been pushed back until the fall.  Initially the General Services Administration (GSA) had hoped to have a draft Environmental Assessment (EA) readied by "late spring" and to auction the property off beginning in late summer. With June just around the corner, the agency is re-evaluating its timelines, now hoping to release the draft EA in June and a final report in late summer. The property would then go to the auction block in the fall. The draft EA will include data collected about the site and offer an evaluation of the existing condition and potential impacts the sale would have on the property and community …

Tari's Expansion Troubles Continue

Tari at 1525 Wisconsin Avenue has until August 31 to bring an almost-finished rear addition into compliance.

Tari, a consignment boutique on at 1525 Wisconsin Ave., has until August 31 to resolve zoning and Commission on Fine Arts problems with a new two story rear addition that has already been built. Otherwise, the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) will revoke the permit, which the agency has since determined was issued in error. Tuesday the Board of Zoning Adjustment (BZA) met to discuss an appeal by neighbors to that erroneously-granted permit, but decided to delay a hearing until September 25 in consideration of the DCRA August 31 deadline. Get daily and breaking news email updates from Georgetown Patch by signing up for newsletters here. Sara Mokhtari, the owner of Tari, first received permit approval in early 2011 to …

Streetcar Tracks Unearthed During Wisconsin Avenue Construction

DDOT included possible streetcar work in the bid with construction company Fort Meyer.

Streetcar tracks unearthed on Wisconsin Avenue during the early stages of construction for the Glover Park Wisconsin Avenue Project should not impact the project budget, according to District Department of Transportation (DDOT). DDOT Project Manager Paul Hoffman said his agency "suspected" that the streetcar tracks were buried under the northbound lanes of Wisconsin Avenue and included possible work on them in the bid DDOT awarded to Fort Meyer construction. Hoffman explained that Fort Meyer would be able to run electrical lines for the street lamps parallel to the Verizon utility ducts in the street. The tracks should not have to be removed entirely for the project to proceed. But Hoffman said he could not speak to whether or not the …

MedStar: Georgetown Hospital is Staying Put

Georgetown Hospital quashed rumors that the hospital was considering a move downtown.

MedStar Georgetown University Hospital is not moving, a hospital spokesperson insists. Last week the Washington Post reported that a developer of the downtown Capitol Crossing site over I-395 said the location was perfect for Georgetown's hospital. “We think this is a great site for a medical school or hospital facility,” Robert Braunohler, Property Group Partners regional vice president, told the Post. For Georgetowners the most meaningful part of a possible relocation was what would happen with the space if and when the hospital relocated. Neighbors were quick to comment on the Patch article about the rumored move. "Works for me, if they'll actually convert the old hospital into dorms" one commenter wrote. But the Washington Business …

Georgetown Park Secures Permits for Interior Facelift

The Shops at Georgetown Park received permits for interior structural work.

Though you might not be able to tell when you pass by on M Street, the Shops at Georgetown Park will be getting a renovation over the next few months. Vornado Realty Trust and Angelo Gordon & Co. received permits last week for interior non-structural demolition, as first reported in the Washington Business Journal. Most of the shops on the mall's interior have been asked to vacate, leaving the space dim and quiet since most departed in late 2011, early 2012. The work will take place on both the parking garage and the mall itself. There will be renovations in the retail space at the C&O Canal level, Wisconsin Avenue level, and M Street level. All work permitted at this point is for the interior. Last year the Georgetown Advisory …

Georgetown Waterfront Ice Skating Rink Becoming a Reality

The Washington Harbour is undergoing construction and improvements that should wrap up by the end of 2012.

The Washington Harbour will feature an ice skating rink and fully-renovated waterfront restaurants once construction, currently underway, wraps up in the end of 2012. The new rink should be ready for winter 2013. Even before flood waters damaged much of the waterfront property at the Washington Harbour complex last April, MRP Realty had plans to renovate the space at 3000 and 3050 K Street. After months of design review, the proposed ice skating rink garnered approval in October. Now MRP and Rockpoint Group announced that construction is underway on the $20 million exterior renovation. During the winter months the fountain area will be converted into a 12,000 square-foot, waterfront, skating rink. During warmer months it will feature a …

Shared Workspace Concept Opens in Georgetown

A new 'co-working' space in the Foundry Building offers desks by the hour or the day and offices for a month or more.

When the WiFi at Starbucks—not to mention the whurring espresso machine— makes working on the road or "from home" a non-starter, shared workspaces are filling the need for a flexible and profession office alternative. A new co-working office in the Foundry Building on 30th Street offers shared common workspaces as well as traditional private office spaces. Carr Workplaces' Georgetown location is the company's first to offer common workspaces alongside more conventional offices. Carr, founded in 2003 and headquartered in D.C., has six other properties in the District, eight more in Maryland and Virginia, and provides offices to some 1,400 clients in the metro D.C. area. Shared work spaces or co-working offices have grown in popularity in …

Georgetown Boathouse Zone Meeting Saturday

The National Park Service public workshop will be Saturday, Mar. 3 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The National Park Service (NPS) will hold a four-hour, public workshop Saturday Mar. 3 on the feasibility study for a non-motorized boathouse zone along the Potomac River in Georgetown. The meeting is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the School Without Walls, which is located at 2130 G St., NW. Anyone can attend. The study area runs from 34th Street to about 1,200 feet upstream of the Key Bridge. NPS first proposed a non-motorized boat zone for the area in 1986. Since that time several iterations and stages of the plan have advanced only to later stall. Since an open house in December, the NPS has worked with key stakeholders and will share findings from those meetings while considering public input at the Saturday workshop. During the …
