Photos: Winter on the Water and St. Lucia Procession

The Embassy of Sweden and the Washington Harbour celebrated the holidays Saturday.

Winter on the Georgetown waterfront is very different this year: a once very quiet, empty space has come to life with a skating rink and winter holiday celebrations. Saturday the House of Sweden celebrated the holidays with a Christmas Bazaar and a St. Lucia choral presentation and precession. A group of women and girls dressed in white robes with red ribbons filled the crisp evening air with traditional songs. Later they processed to the Washington Harbour's new ice rink where families skated and took in the Winter on the Water celebration.

Washington Harbour Ice Rink Grand Opening Set for Dec. 1

Rink to open mid-November, but official celebration scheduled next month with Embassy of Sweden.

The Georgetown waterfront ice rink will take center stage Dec. 1 during a just announced "Winter on the Water" celebration. The event, from 4 to 7 p.m., will feature ice skating performances, a St. Lucia presentation and special food and beverages, among other entertainment. The "Winter on the Water" fete complements the Swedish Christmas Bazaar at the neighboring House of Sweden from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. the same day. "The Swedish choir will present a St. Lucia procession from the bazaar into the Washington Harbour plaza at 5:15 p.m. then perform carols at Winter on the Water," according to a press release. The Georgetown waterfront ice rink will be open from mid-November through March seven days a week. Hours are noon to 9 p.m. Monday …
