Earlier Pool Hours Under Consideration at Parks and Recreation

An online petition asked DPR to consider opening DC public pools earlier in the morning during the summer.

A petition that called for earlier pool opening times during the summer caught the attention of the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) this week. DPR is holding internal meetings and having preliminary conversations about what it would take to meet the demands of a recent online petition "People are definitely taking it seriously and seeing if it can be done," John Stokes, a spokesman for DPR, told Patch. Capitol Hill resident Lyndsey Medsker started the petition, which calls for outdoor pools accomodate older residents and residents with young children by opening at 10 a.m.—two hours earlier than most normally do. Earlier Summer Pool Hours Sought in Online Petition

An online petition asks for public outdoor pools in the District to open at 10 a.m. instead of noon.

An online petition asks the DC Government to consider opening DC public outdoor pools earlier in the day during the summer months. The petition suggests opening at 10 a.m. instead of noon, as many currently do. Capitol Hill resident Lyndsey Medsker started the petition in mid-February and it had 375 supporters as at 1 p.m. Tuesday. The petition states: "Open DC public outdoor pools at 10am this summer. Bruce Majors lives near the Francis Pool, just over Rock Creek Park near Dupont Circle.  "I've given up on using them and I live a few blocks from the one at 25th and N. Whenever…

If Mayor Gray can't figure out how to use all those unemployed teens given make work jobs by the DC government to extend the pool staffs, then the DC government is not competent to …   more ›

Pools Stay Open Later, Trash Collection Starts Earlier

District agencies respond to expected high temperatures.

The mini heat wave hitting the District this week means a few changes for Georgetowners' daily summer routines: trash will be collected earlier and pools will stay open later. The Department of Public Works (DPW) will start trash collection at 6 a.m. for the remainder of the week in anticipation of high temperatures during normal service hours. Starting work an hour earlier helps crews avoid health or environmental issues on days when the temperature and heat index are predicted to be above 90 degrees, according to a press release from DPW. Trash may be placed on the curb starting at 6 p.m. the day before collection. Trash and recycling containers have to be removed by 8 p.m. on collection day. If you're looking to keep cool, select pools …
