DDOT's plans end at the Georgetown waterfront.
Georgetown University wants the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) to consider extending a proposed streetcar line to or beyond the main Georgetown campus, rather than ending the line at the Georgetown waterfront. DDOT is currently engaged in a study of premium transit lines between Union Station and Georgetown, among those options is a streetcar. In maps the agency has released of a possible 22-mile streetcar system, one line would end at the Georgetown waterfront. But GU and the Georgetown Business Improvement District (BID) think DDOT should extend the study area to include a line that would service the university and maybe even extend farther west. For Georgetown, the streetcar would help deliver on commitments made in the …

The District Department of Transportation is evaluating a range of modes and routes for better connectivity between Union Station and Georgetown.
The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will continue to rely on public input as it develops a plan to improve transit service between Union Station and the Georgetown waterfront. Just what form or route that service will take depends in part on feedback from residents. Premium transit could include a new express bus line, bus rapid transit, a streetcar, or even light rail transit. In Georgetown, the study area for a new route stretches from 33rd Street to the West, K Street to the South and M Street to the North. Between Georgetown and Union Station the study area generally centers on K, L, and I Streets from 33rd Street NW to 3rd Street NE. You can see an outlined map here. According to the DDOT website, the needs for an …

International experts weigh in on proposed "22‐mile priority network" of streetcar lines, including route from Union Station to Georgetown.
Leading transportation experts and companies from around the world were among the 20 respondents to the District Department of Transportation (DDOT)'s recent requests for input on a local transportation system. “The response far exceeded our expectations,” DDOT Director Terry Bellamy said in a press release. “This level of response is indicative of the broad interest and promising nature of the project. It is a unique opportunity to provide premium transit services to the District.” In June, DDOT asked industry experts to weigh in on a possible 22-mile priority streetcar system and local bus service operations. Though DDOT has proposed a 37-mile system proposed that would bring streetcars to all eight wards, the 22-mile priority system …

One of the priority routes proposed is a Union Station to Georgetown line.
The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is soliciting feedback from industry experts on a proposed "22‐mile priority network" of streetcar lines, including one that would run from Union Station to Georgetown. The Request for Information (RFI) released Tuesday seeks feedback from industry experts to guide DDOT's planning and could lead to a formal procurement process. But DDOT was clear, at this point, the RFI is exploratory. "No contract or agreement will be entered into as a result of this process, nor does this RFI initiate a formal procurement." Though DDOT has a 37-mile system proposed that would bring streetcars to all eight wards, the 22-mile priority system would focus on a smaller core within that larger 37-mile vision. …

Contractors are beginning to remove the streetcar tracks on 36th Street between O and P Streets as part of the street rehabilitation project.
Joining the contractors with their jackhammers and saws at the construction site on 36th Street were cameras and National Park Service (NPS) historians. The O and P Street project has entered into a new phase, removing historic streetcar rails from 36th Street between O and P Streets. Today, NPS personnel documented the Georgetown streetcar rails and yokes to enter the project in the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) at the Library of Congress (LOC). Justine Christianson is an historian with HAER. She helped initiate the partnership between the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) and NPS after first learning about the O and P Streets project at an historic road conference last year. She approached DDOT about allowing …

Has anyone done a study which shows that the "streetcar" is anymore efficient than a bus or a bicycle or whatever? Those overhead powerlines in a snow storm?   more ›
