Evans asks DDOT to consider adding a second northbound lane through Glover Park.
Community leaders concluded a discussion on the Wisconsin Avenue streetscape project in Glover Park Monday night by asking the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) to find near-term solutions to some of the most apparent problems with the new lane reconfigurations. The Wisconsin Avenue Streetscape Project widended sidewalks, improved lighting and reduced the number of lanes of traffic in Glover Park. The number of lanes for traffic decreased from three to two during peak hours and from two to one during non-peak hours. Select intersections now have left-turn lanes. Georgetown residents and organizations stood up one after another at Monday's Advisory Neighborhood Commission to express their displeasure with the new traffic patterns…

In the absence of data, anecdotes dominate the debate over the impacts and merits of the Glover Park Streetscape project.
The new alignment of Wisconsin Avenue in Glover Park has been the subject of neighborhood listserv posts, comment streams, Facebook pages, blog posts, and now two upcoming public meetings with high ranking local officials. Councilmembers Mary Cheh (D-Ward 3) and Jack Evans (D-Ward 2) and District Department of Transportation (DDOT) Director Terry Bellamy will attend a discussion Monday at Georgetown’s monthly Advisory Neighborhood Commission meeting. In May, Cheh has scheduled a roundtable to allow the DDOT to present its preliminary data and for the public to provide feedback. The streetscape project’s wider sidewalks and new streetlights have received generally positive responses, with most people Patch interviewed about the project …

Community members turn to Facebook to vent about the Wisconsin Avenue Streetscape Project.
Photos of lines of cars siting in traffic on Wisconsin Avenue, comments about the city fixing things that are not broken and a collection of notes pasted from emails make up the Glover Park Traffic Jam Facebook page that reflects some Glover Park area residents' frustrations about the new Wisconsin Avenue lane configuration. The $5 million Wisconsin Avenue Streetscape Project reduced the number of lanes for traffic from three to two during peak hours and from two to one during non-peak hours; select intersections now have left turn lanes. Among the project's goals was improving pedestrian safety. Rick Gersten emailed the community in early February to see if he had others who might work with him to try to press the District Department of …

Residents of Glover Park and Burleith are debating whether the Wisconsin Avenue Streetscape Project succeeded.
Whether or not the new lane configuration on Wisconsin Avenue is working depends on how you define "working." Rick Gersten has lived in or near Glover Park since 1984. "It’s the first time I’ve been this irritated in 30 years," he told Patch. Gersten recently posted a note on a local listserv asking if there were enough other people like him who who might want to "speak with one voice in opposition to this new traffic pattern" on Wisconsin Avenue. Get daily and breaking news email updates from Georgetown Patch by signing up for newsletters here. The $5 million Wisconsin Avenue Streetscape Project, which is substantially completed, reduced the number of lanes for traffic from three to two during peak hours and from two to one during non-…

A look at a few of the most notable stories this week on Georgetown Patch.
Key Bridge Jumper Derails Georgetown Traffic During Rush Hour Over the course of three hours Tuesday night, DC emergency personnel had their hands full both trying to talk a man out of committing suicide by jumping from the Key Bridge and managing the traffic in Georgetown that resulted from a closed Key Bridge. Everyone has an opinion on the Glover Park Streetscape Our readers had strong opinions about the Glover Park Streetscape and the resulting traffic on many sidestreets. The Georgetown ANC is collecting feedback on the project, but playing a wait-and-see game before taking any further action about the changes to lane configurations on Wisconsin Avenue. Neighbors in Georgetown and Burleith have started raising concerns about increased traffic.
Georgetown's Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners (ANC) are "collecting anecdotal evidence" about the impact of the Glover Park Streetscape project on traffic on Georgetown and Burleith streets. At the ANC meeting Wednesday, Commissioner Ron Lewis said they have received a "significant" number of complaints about increased traffic on 37th Street in Burleith and 35th Street near Hardy Middle School. "It has been hard to figure out what is due to construction and what is due to the configuration," Lewis said. The Glover Park Streetscape project broke ground in April and was "substantially complete" in mid-December. The project reduced the number of lanes for traffic from three to two during peak hours and from two to one during non-peak hours…

Residents have wanted a safer intersection for years and remain frustrated on the slow pace of change.
The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will re-design the intersection of Tunlaw Road and 37th Street in Glover Park. Changes will be put into place as the Wisconsin Avenue Streetscape project is wrapping up later this summer. Tom C. Smith, community representative for Mayor Gray in Ward 3, made the announcement last week on the Glover Park listserv and DDOT offered details on the project at the Glover Park Advisory Neighborhood Commission meeting last Thursday. Smith wrote that the intersection was identified as a "safety concern—due to poor geometry—in the Glover Park Transportation Study." During discussions about the ongoing Wisconsin Avenue Streetscape project, neighbors have consistently argued that the Tunlaw Road …

The new Washington Globe streetlights replace 'cobra' lights on Wisconsin Avenue
Gone are the highway-esque "cobra" style lights of Wisconsin Avenue in Glover Park and in their stead are new Washington Globe lights. The lights are just one element of the Glover Park Wisconsin Avenue Project to upgrade the streetscape and change the lane configuration. Local blog 73rd & Walnut posted photos of the new streetlights. "First off, let me tell you that they are beautiful. Shiny and black," wrote Adriana Cordero. But Cordero admitted she was "puzzled" by the placement of one such new light (in the middle of the sidewalk, blocking pedestrians) and the size (they are as tall as the lights they replaced). The Glover Park Streetscape Project will widen sidewalks, create a center median and reduce the number of traffic lanes on …

DDOT included possible streetcar work in the bid with construction company Fort Meyer.
Streetcar tracks unearthed on Wisconsin Avenue during the early stages of construction for the Glover Park Wisconsin Avenue Project should not impact the project budget, according to District Department of Transportation (DDOT). DDOT Project Manager Paul Hoffman said his agency "suspected" that the streetcar tracks were buried under the northbound lanes of Wisconsin Avenue and included possible work on them in the bid DDOT awarded to Fort Meyer construction. Hoffman explained that Fort Meyer would be able to run electrical lines for the street lamps parallel to the Verizon utility ducts in the street. The tracks should not have to be removed entirely for the project to proceed. But Hoffman said he could not speak to whether or not the …

Council member Mary Cheh and DDOT Director Terry Bellamy will discuss Ward 3 transportation issues tonight.
Monday night residents will have their chance to ask questions and get some answers about Ward 3 transportation issues, including the Glover Park Streetscape Project on Wisconsin Avenue. Council member Mary Cheh and District Department of Transportation (DDOT) Director Terry Bellamy are hosting a town hall meeting Monday at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) from 7 to 8:30 p.m. "The Glover Park and Cleveland Park transportation projects, in addition to the Ward 3 Livability Study, will be among the key initiatives to be discussed" according to a press release. The Glover Park Streetscape Project will widen sidewalks, create a center median and reduce the number of traffic lanes on Wisconsin Avenue. The project will reduce the…
