Arcuri Eying Early June Opening

The American-Italian restaurant will open at 2400 Wisconsin Ave. NW.

Arcuri, a new American-Italian restaurant coming to Glover Park, hopes to open by June 4 or 5 at 2400 Wisconsin Ave. NW, the former home of Kavanagh's Pizza Pub. Kavanagh's closed Jan. 31 and Arcuri started its lease Feb. 1. The new restaurant recently posted several jobs on Craigslist, including servers, busboys, line cooks, hosts and more. Though the menu is still being finalized, in its draft for it features a large selection of pizzas, entrees like a wood-fired pork chop and starters ranging from cheeses to misticanza with duck prosciutto, sicilian pinenuts and dressing.  Read: Arcuri Aims for April Opening in Glover Park

Glover Park Residents Bemoan Loss of Local Ice Cream Store, Call for Boycott

A twitter campaign under the hashtag #SaveMaxs is calling for a boycott of Rocklands Barbeque.

Loyal customers are rallying around Glover Park ice cream shop Max's Best Ice Cream as news comes that its lease is being terminated in favor of allowing Rocklands Barbeque to expand into that storefront. Rocklands sent out a press release Monday telling its customers that they wish no ill will toward Max's and were merely taking advantage of an offer from the landlord to expand. "Since we opened more than 22 years ago, we’ve been barbequing for our customers in a space about the size of a one-bedroom apartment. We are sorry to see Max’s Best Ice Cream go; we’ve always enjoyed having Max’s Best as a neighbor," wrote Rocklands owner John Snedden. Still many fans of Max's are upset about the sudden turn of events. Whether commenting on an …

Some folks have put together a petition asking Barbara and Gail Bassin, the landlords, to reconsider terminating Max's lease. This petition will be sent to the landlords when we get 100 or more signatures. If you have any suggestions on the language or any other courses of action that could be taken, please post on the wall or let us know. https://www.change.org/petitions/ruppert-real-estate-…   more ›

Rocklands Confirms Expansion into Max's Ice Cream Space

The barbecue restaurant in Glover Park has long been interested in expanding next door.

Rocklands Barbeque, 2418 Wisconsin Ave. NW, is planning an expansion into the Max's Best Ice Cream space, 2416 Wisconsin Ave. NW, when the ice cream shop closes June 30, according to a post on the Rocklands website and as first reported on neighborhood blog Hyperlocal Glover Park.  Max's Best Ice Cream owner, Max Keshani, received a written notice Friday that his lease was being terminated after some 20 years in business at the location. Keshani speculated to Patch that the neighboring barbecue joint had its eyes on his space. In an interview with Hyperlocal Glover Park, Rocklands owner John Snedden confirmed that he will be expanding into the ice cream shop space: "He says that he has never made a secret of his interest in expanding, if …

Bus Changes Considered for Glover Park

The Advisory Neighborhood Commission is seeking public input on Metro's proposed bus changes.

Metro has proposed removing two bus stop location and has offered two solutions to prevent buses from idling near Stoddert Elementary during the school day. The Glover Park Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) is seeking public input on both issues. The ANC will discuss the proposals at the May 9 meeting. Should you care to comment on the proposals, you may send your preferences or comments via email at info@anc3b.org. Removing Bus Stops 41st and Calvert Street NW A no parking zone near this stop prevents the bus from stopping up against the curb, according to the ANC email. There is another stop slight farther east on the same block of Calvert Street. Were this stop to be removed, passenger would have to walk an addition block to the …

Max's Ice Cream Lease Being Terminated

The Glover Park ice cream shop received a notice Friday that its lease would end effective June 30.

Max's Best Ice Cream in Glover Park received notice Friday that its lease would not be renewed and that the business must vacate the space by June 30. The shop has called 2416 Wisconsin Ave. NW home for some 20 years. "I'm a part of the village," said owner Max Keshani. "This is my home, this is my life." Keshani attended American University and his daughter went to school at nearby Stoddert Elementary. He said he has been trying to negotiate a new lease with the landlord since some time in November when he was told his rent would be raised an extra $1,200 a month. When he had not heard anything, he had his daughter write to the landlord about their lease. Then, on Friday, he received a letter telling him to turn in his keys by June 30. He…

'Pie in the Face' for Glover Park Teacher (Video)

Steve Dingledine, a fifth-grade teacher at Stoddert Elementary, continued this messy tradition

Steve Dingledine, a fifth-grade teacher at Stoddert Elementary, got creamed — chocolate cream to be precise — Thursday afternoon on the school playground. It was the fourth annual Pie in the Face day event.  Two sisters baked their own pies — one chocolate and one cherry pie — and promptly shoved them in Dingledine's face to the delight of their schoolmates. Dingledine participates in this sweet and sticky tradition each year as part of a "thank you" to students who have just finished days of standardized testing under the District of Columbia Comprehensive assessment System. The honor of throwing a pie in his face is a prize auctioned each year at the PTA's annual Big Chili fundraiser.  Fellow fifth-grade teacher Craig Duff led students …

Watch: Norwegian King’s Guard at Stoddert Elementary

The Band and Drill team of the Norwegian King’s Guard performed on the Stoddert Elementary field in Glover Park Tuesday.

One of only three performances by the Band and Drill team of the Norwegian King’s Guard during their current visit to the U.S. happened Tuesday right in Glover Park at Stoddert Elementary. A slight drizzle could not deter the 120-member King’s Guard as they performed a range of routines in full dress uniform on the Stoddert baseball field on Calvert Street, NW. One of the Stoddert fifth-grade classes is partnered with the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Washington, D.C. as part of the Embassy Adoption Program. The King's Guard was in the D.C. area because of its participation in the Virginia International Tattoo—a military musical display—in Norfolk, Va. last week. The King's Guard in responsible for the safety of the Norwegian royal family. …

Whole Foods Hubbub Dominates Neighborhood Listserv

Whole Foods in Glover Park changed its checkout area about seven weeks ago and is under relatively new management.

Residents feel strongly about the new floor plan at the Glover Park Whole Foods, as evidenced by the 37 (and counting) posts on the topic that have dominated the Glover Park listserv since the first message appeared Tuesday. The Whole Foods recently added express lane check out, similar to what you would find at the Foggy Bottom and P Street locations. The original poster wrote: "There is a large dead space in the middle of the check outs and now one must go down to the 'cafe' and stand in line to go towards checkouts in either direction. So now we have two way traffic in a narrow space and its a mess and a safety hazard. A little girl got mowed down by a cart and was screaming her head off the other day." And the responses started pouring…

Cuts to Stoddert Pre-K Made with 'A Lot of Thought'

Principal Patricia Pride cut a pre-K class for next year in favor of adding a fourth kindergarten class to meet demand at Glover Park's Stoddert Elementary.

Cutting a pre-K class to add a fourth kindergarten class at Glover Park's Stoddert Elementary was both a long time coming and a too-late-for-some decision, according to school Principal Patricia Pride. Many future Stoddert Elementary parents were left in the lurch after the pre-K lottery results came in last Friday and dozens of local children were unable to get a slot in their local school in part because there will be one, instead of two, pre-K classes this fall. Pride said the kindergarten classes have been over-enrolled for several years and even though the school added a third kindergarten class a few years ago, this year all three were over the ideal ratio of 20 students per class. DCPS is required to find space for all in-boundary …

I sent you an email a while ago and I'll resend it. After reviewing what I wrote- I had second thoughts about the phrasing. Since I've met you I can attest to what a great person you are. My beef is with DCPS and not you and if I implied that- my apologies. Unless they fired their demographer, they could have predicted an overall growth pattern when they made the plans to renovate Stoddert a few …   more ›

'Glover Park Traffic Jam' Facebook Page Collects Frustrations

Community members turn to Facebook to vent about the Wisconsin Avenue Streetscape Project.

Photos of lines of cars siting in traffic on Wisconsin Avenue, comments about the city fixing things that are not broken and a collection of notes pasted from emails make up the Glover Park Traffic Jam Facebook page that reflects some Glover Park area residents' frustrations about the new Wisconsin Avenue lane configuration. The $5 million Wisconsin Avenue Streetscape Project reduced the number of lanes for traffic from three to two during peak hours and from two to one during non-peak hours; select intersections now have left turn lanes. Among the project's goals was improving pedestrian safety. Rick Gersten emailed the community in early February to see if he had others who might work with him to try to press the District Department of …
