Georgetown University Embraces Green Lifestyle

From using fewer plastic water bottles, to testing out electric cars Georgetown University students and staff are dedicated to improving the sustainability of the campus.

It's not always easy being green, but Georgetown University has launched a series of initiatives to make it easier for students and faculty to be environmentally friendly.  “Many of our initiatives are aimed at making it easy and convenient for our students, faculty and staff to make more sustainable choices during their day to day life on campus,” said Audrey Stewart, MCRP, the program coordinator for sustainability in the office of the senior vice president at Georgetown University. Some of the current initiatives, according to Stewart, include the expansion of water bottle filling stations on campus to eliminate plastic water bottle waste. Little Traffic to M Street Electric Car Charging Station

Georgetown electric vehicle charging stations are not used by residents, but businesses believe demand will come with time.

The SemaConnect electric vehicle charging station at 3307 M Street NW sees “infrequent” use, said EastBanc Vice President Philippe Lanier. However, Lanier stated he expects “the station to be used more and more as more electric vehicles come into circulation.” The electric vehicle charging station was installed at the M Street parking location in December 2011 under the guidance of businesses EastBanc Inc., a commercial and residential real estate development company, and Jamestown, a real estate investment and management firm. The two businesses collaborated with Parking Management Inc. (PMI) to initiate plans for an electric vehicle charging space on M Street—the first of its kind in Georgetown. Green Roofs Are Trés Chic in Georgetown

DC buildings, like the French Embassy, are installing green roofs thanks to environmental rebates.

DC’s green roof rebate program is turning enough heads that even foreign governments are taking advantage of funding for sustainable development.  The French Embassy in Georgetown is one of several local buildings to take advantage of the Anacostia Water Shed (AWS) green roof rebate plan this year. Others include Rhode Island Row, 2300-2350 Washington Pl. NE, Aquinus Hall at Catholic University and a home at 813 A St. NE. "We are thrilled the French Embassy has installed a green roof and are participating in the District's rebate program," Michael Lucy, senior consultant with AWS, said in an email to Patch.
