Potomac Phil Returns for DC's Second Annual Groundhog Day Event

Potomac Phil will once again participate in a Groundhog Day event in Dupont Circle.

For the second year in a row, Potomac Phil, the taxidermied D.C. relative of Pennsylvania's Punxsutawney Phil, will make an appearance on Groundhog Day to predict spring's arrival. Fittingly, Potomac Phil also has a penchant for political predictions. This year's event will begin at 7:30 a.m. Feb. 2 at the fountain in Dupont Circle. Phil will make his appearance at 8 a.m. According to the event website: "Potomac Phil, the National Groundhog, will make an appearance and offer weather and political predictions. Phil will let us know whether to expect six more weeks of winter or an early spring. Live accordion music, polka dancers, local celebrities, VIPs and school children will participate." Update: Potomac Phil Sees His Shadow, More Winter Ahead

D.C. resident Aaron DeNu started a groundhog's day tradition in Dupont Circle Thursday.

A taxidermied Potomac Phil saw his shadow during a ceremony at Dupont Circle, Thursday. D.C. resident should brace for six more weeks of winter.  Original Post A groundhog's day tradition could begin today in Dupont Circle, if Aaron DeNu can track down a live, non-hibernating groundhog to become the first Potomac Phil in time for this morning's 8:30 a.m. ceremony. DeNu began planning the event about a month ago, according to the Huffington Post D.C. He even got permission from the D.C. Department of the Environment's Fisheries & Wildlife division to have a live groundhog at the ceremony in Dupont cricle.  Hibernation is the biggest obstacle to having a live groundhog at the first ever ceremony in the District. Wow. You are the epitome of a grouch. I passed by the event today on my way to work and I thought it was awesome. I definitely think that this city needs way more spontaneity.
