Education, Parking and Zoning Dominate Georgetown Candidate Forum

Four of the seven candidates for the At-large seat on the District Council attended a forum in Georgetown Monday.

The race for the At-large seat on the District Council brought out four of the then seven candidates to Georgetown Monday to explain their (at times quite nuanced) differences on hot issues like parking, zoning and education. The special election April 23 will fill the At-large seat vacated by Phil Mendelson when he became the Council Chairman in November. Anita Bonds was selected in the interim to the position in December by the DC Democratic State Committee, of which she was the chairwoman at the time. Bonds was one of three candidates who did not attend the Georgetown Business Association's candidate forum Monday. Also missing were Elissa Silverman (D) and Michael Brown (D). Brown announced Tuesday night that he would be dropping out of…

Jack Evans Backs Anita Bonds in April Special Election

The April 23 special election will fill the At-large seat on the District Council vacated by now Chairman Phil Mendelson.

Ward 2 Councilman Jack Evans has endorsed Anita Bonds for the At-large seat on the DC Council, The Washington Post reports. Bonds is serving as the interim At-large councilwoman prior to the special election to permanently fill the seat on April 23. Evans told The Washington Post that Bonds is “best for the job." A media advisory from Bonds' office quotes a prepared statement from Evans in which he describes her as "tough but diplomatic, a doer not a talker." The seat was vacated when Phil Mendelson became the Council Chairman and Bonds was appointed to the position in December by the DC Democratic State Committee, of which she was the chairwoman at the time. Evans joins fellow councilmembers Marion Barry and Muriel Bowser in endorsing …

Evans Celebrates Milestone as Longest-Serving Councilmember

Ward 2 Councilman Jack Evans has served on the District Cuuncil for 22 years.

Ward 2 Councilman and Georgetown resident Jack Evans celebrated his 7,945th day in office as a member of the District Council Tuesday, making him the longest serving member since the council first formed in 1974. Evans was elected in a special election in 1991 and was most recently reelected in November. Tuesday he tweeted: "Enjoying a celebration of my years in the Council, now the longest serving Councilmember in DC." Former Mayors Anthony Williams and Marion Barry stopped by and fellow Georgetowner and local reporter Mark Plotkin evidently regaled a group gathered for cake in Evans' office with tales from Evans' time on the council, according to tweets from Evans' account. Do you remember when Evans was first elected? Do you have any …

Protesters Rally at Jack Evans' House Halloween Night

A group of protesters with signs stood outside Evans' P Street home on Halloween night.

Around 10 p.m. Halloween a group of about 35 protesters gathered outside Councilman Jack Evans Georgetown home, chanting, holding signs and at one point using blow-horns, according to neighbors. The Anti- Capitalist Trick or Treating was an effort by DarTT (Defending Animals Right Today and Tomorrow) and Anarchist Alliance DC, which was supported by OccupyDC.* Evans told Patch he heard the noise outside around 10 p.m. and initially "did not think anything of it" since there had been a steady stream of trick-or-treaters all night. But when he heard them "chanting my name," said Evans, he decided to go outside to see what it was they wanted. "I've learned over the years, the best way to deal with a protest is going out and engaging them," …

Local Leaders Talk Sequestration, Stability for Businesses

The Georgetown Business Association hosted its first economic forum on Thursday night.

A panel of local leaders weighed in on the implications of national and local economics and the affects of taxes on Washington, D.C. business at the City Tavern Club in the heart of the Georgetown business district on Thursday night. “Our city is really strong today. Our downtown is being rebuilt and our neighborhoods are being rebuilt,” said Ward 2 Councilmember Jack Evans, at the forum’s opening. However, he said he worries that the “bad actions” of congress and the president, such as failure to act in stopping sequestration, will affect the District of Columbia “dramatically.” The Georgetown Business Association held its first economic forum composed of Evans, former congressman Jim Moody, Georgetown resident and entrepreneur Ray Regan…

Parents: Dangerous Crossing Needs Guard

Wisconsin Avenue crosswalks at O and P Street are treacherous, Georgetown's Hyde-Addison Elementary families say.

Parents from Georgetown's Hyde-Addison Elementary want a crossing guard or other safety precaution for one of the Wisconsin Avenue crosswalks near the school because, as one parent wrote, crossing to get her daughter to school is "the scariest part of my day." A group of parents on the PTA are organizing, counting crossings and dangerous traffic incidents, and writing letters to garner support for more safety measures at either the O or P Street crosswalk on Wisconsin Avenue. "Gripping my young daughter's hand and waving my hands while we're in the crosswalk occasions absolutely no sympathy with drivers barreling down the street," wrote Alison Jia in an email to Patch. Jia is one of several parents who is organizing the effort on behalf of…

D.C. Statue to Finally Appear in U.S. Capitol

The statue of Frederick Douglass will join figures from all 50 states in Statuary Hall.

The statue of Frederick Douglass, which has been relegated to the halls of One Judiciary Square since 2008, will soon takes its place in the United States Capitol building's Statuary Hall. Each state has two statues of famous citizens on display in the halls of the Capitol building. For years, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and D.C. Ward 2 Councilman Jack Evans have been advocating for the District to also have its two statues on display. Wednesday the House approved a bill by a voice vote to allow Douglass's statue, one of D.C.'s two statues, to be displayed and then Thursday, the Senate passed the bill by unanimous consent. The bill will not go to President Barack Obama for his signature. "Finally, District school children will no …

Officials Break Ground on The Montrose, the Hurt Home Condo

The 15-unit building will have 30 parking spaces.

The historic Hurt Home, which the District sold to developers Argos Group for $775,000, will become The Montrose condominiums in a year's time if all goes according to plan. Mayor Vincent Gray, Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development Victor Hoskins, developer Gilbert Cardenas, Ward 2 Councilman Jack Evans and Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner Charlie Eason shoveled the ceremonial groundbreaking dirt for the 15-unit project Monday. Of the 15 for-sale units, three will be reserved as affordable housing for blind people with an income up to 80 percent below the area median income (AMI). The developer will work with the DC Council for the Blind to help identify potential occupants for those affordable units. The Montrose will offer…

VIDEO: Georgetown Gathers to Thank a Leader

Tim Downs played a pivotal role in bringing the O & P Street Project to fruition.

Tim Downs, who lives on P Street with his wife Barbara, received a surprise Thursday, when several dozen members of the community gathered on the sidewalk in front of his home to say thank you. Downs, who is battling cancer, was wheeled to a balcony window so he could see his friends and neighbors as one by one they offered speeches and words of gratitude. Mayor Vincent Gray even declared Aug. 16 Tim Downs Day. "We are here, Tim, to tell you how much we appreciate your contribution to the Georgetown community," said ANC Commissioner Ed Solomon. Downs has been an active member of the Georgetown community and played a key role in seeing the O and P Street Project finally happen, after more than 20 years of advocacy. "Without your efforts, …

Evans, Neighbors Lobby Behind the Scenes of West Heating Plant Disposition

Letters detail the efforts of Ward 2 Councilman Jack Evans and neighborhood organizations to influence the General Services Administration.

As time ticks down to the General Services Administration (GSA) auction of the West Heating Plant later this fall, Georgetown civic groups and Ward 2 Councilman Jack Evans are lobbying for zoning restrictions and possibly a set-aside of park land on the federally-owned property. The West Heating Plant is a surplus federal property at 29th and K Streets, NW adjacent to Rock Creek Park and the C&O Canal. The property is not zoned, though GSA recently assumed in its draft Environmental Asessment (EA) that a W-2 mixed-use zoning would be most likely. In that document, the agency estimated that a future developer might expect to include 181 new residential units and as much as 181,210 square feet of commercial and retail space on the site. In a…

Sorry Michael, if you wanted green space for a "soccerplex" you probably should've moved to NoVa or Maryland. This heating plant is in the middle of a dense urban environment and would cost the city millions to develop as a soccerplex in addition to the millions lost over the course of the soccerplex's existence on maintenance and lost tax revenue. Georgetown is literally surrounding on all sides…   more ›
