Shell gas is taking over at 1576 Wisconsin Ave. where a fire ripped through the Georgetown Auto Shop and Washingtonian gas station.
Construction continues on the Shell gas station coming to 1576 Wisconsin Ave. NW, which used to be the Georgetown Auto Shop and Washingtonian gas station before a March 2011 fire. Patch first reported that Shell was coming to the site in September. The station sat untouched for more than a year before the new owner Roland Joun went before the Georgetown Advisory Neighborhood Commission in September seeking permits. "I know it's been an eyesore and we really want to get it up to par," Joun said at the time. Since then the owners have received permits to make the space usable once more. But the new station will not look much different from the old station. Permits so far have been strictly to replace the roof, store front and garage doors, "…

The owner says the closure is for renovations and is not permanent.
The Watergate Exxon gas station, known for its very high gas prices, appeared to be shuttered Friday. But The Washington City Paper reports that the closure is temporary. The Washington Post's John Kelly was the first local media outlet to report that the gas station appeared to be closed Friday afternoon. According to the City Paper, owner Joe Mamo said the station was closed for "renovations." Earlier this year, Kelly wrote about the infamously expensive gas station, explaining that the high prices seem to be the result of an ongoing disagreement between Mamo, who owns the station and Roland Joun, who operates it. Former Georgetown Auto Shop, Washingtonian gas site on Wisconsin Ave prepares for new tenant
The owners of the fire-ravaged Georgetown Auto Shop and Washingtonian gas station at 1576 Wisconsin Ave. hope to reopen the station two months from now. But when it does, it will boast a new brand name: Shell. Roland Joun, a representative for the gas station, told the Georgetown Advisory Neighborhood Commission at a meeting Tuesday he anticipates receiving permit approval by early October and to wrap up construction quickly. Joun also operates the Exxon gas station by the Watergate. "I know its been an eyesore and we really want to get it up to par. And so two months from now the station should be open," Joun said. The gas station has been closed since a fire broke out just before 8 a.m. March 15, 2011. It began in the repair garage, but …

Haha I was thinking the same thing. The article I link to from The Washington Post, though makes it seem like the prices are artificially high there because of a spat between the station owner and the gasoline supplier. Interesting stuff! -SC   more ›
