DC Small Business Earns High Marks

In a recent survey, DC small businesses rated themselves second in the country for current economic health and also rated ease of regulations with an "A" score.

DC small businesses rated themselves second highest in the country for current economic health, according to a recent study by Thumbtack.com. The site, which helps locals find professionals such as photographers and tutors, conducted a nationwide survey of 6,000 small businesses to obtain the ratings. Keith Lipert of Keith Lipert Gallery on M Street has been in business for 16 years and said he is happy with the economy in Georgetown for small business. He said the Business Improvement District is partially responsible for booming business in Georgetown. "I think we have a lot to be thankful for in DC," he said. Local Boutique Aims to Dispel Fashion Myths

Keith Lipert: 'No one has been told “No” by so many women as I have.'

M Street Boutique owner and trusted fashion confidante, Keith Lipert, has launched a second blog, through which he hopes to dispel fashion myths he has heard from his many clients over the past 17 years. Through "Fashion Myths," Lipert hopes to share with a wider audience the advice he has offered to his loyal customers throughout the years. In his "About Us" section of his blog, Lipert writes, "Women of all ages would come in and say 'I cannot wear this because of that…' or 'I am too this so that will not work on me'…" He seeks to show that those little misgivings are just plain wrong. Though he's been told "no" by many women in his boutique when he suggests a new style, Lipert says he's enjoyed finding the right balance and ultimately a …

Small Businesses At Your Fingertips

Georgetown's small businesses embrace the web for marketing, sales and conversations with customers within and beyond the village.

Keith Lipert envisions his shop as not just a place to buy a fabulous gift or the perfect accessory for a formal occasion, but also as a salon where people can "see beautiful things, have interesting conversation." So when the Keith Lipert Gallery launched a new website and blog Dec. 8, Lipert knew they needed to be "warm, inviting and very personal"-- just like the attention and experience a customer would receive in the store. The website, which now accepts online orders, reflects that his was a "real shop with real people" who will take your order from the shelf and delicately package it for you. Lipert's blog,  "Tales from a Georgetown Shopkeeper," shares the experience of owning a small business in Georgetown, from the "fun stuff" …

The Politics of Gift-Giving

What we give says who we are.

If only President Obama's staff had consulted First Lady Michelle Obama's staff about a gift for Prime Minister Gordon Brown, perhaps the gaffe and ensuing bad press could have been avoided. Michelle Obama gave Sarah Brown a brooch from Keith Lipert's Gallery; certainly Lipert could have suggested the perfect offering for his fellow Englishman, rather than a DVD collection that could not work in the media system at 10 Downing. Behind its unassuming red storefront on M Street, the Keith Lipert Gallery supplies the gifts that forge relationships between world leaders, countries and businesses. It is entirely possible that owner Keith Lipert has single-handedly assured the continuation of diplomatic relationships through his thoughtful …
