Police: West Village resident alerted officers to man breaking into car.
A Georgetown resident's quick actions Monday resulted in the apprehension and arrest of a man suspected of breaking into cars on the 3400 block of N Street, NW, according to police. The suspect had multiple prior arrests, according to police. Officer Antonial Atkins of the Metropolitan Police Department 2nd District wrote in an email to the community: "On Monday November 5th, 2012 at approximately 1400 hrs a Citizen that lives in the 3400 Block of N St NW observed a suspect break into a car. During this criminal act, I was driving west bound in the 3400 block of N St. NW and was flagged down. The suspect was then arrested and charged with multiple offenses. Private cameras and cameras linked to the MPD system are new tools for Georgetown law enforcement
Cameras operating on two different networks will record street activity on Georgetown's main shopping districts and in "gateway" areas to the neighborhood. "I, personally, am a proponent [of the cameras]. Any tool I can have in my tool box, I'll take," said Lt. John Hedgecock. Officers recognized Wednesday by Commander Michael Reese, Citizens Advisory Council.
Seven police officers from the Second District received award and praise from their commander for jobs well done at a monthly meeting Wednesday, as Commander Michael Reese and the Citizens Advisory Council (CAC) presented certificates to the officers for their hard work. Second District Truancy Officers Ebony White and Stephen Owens were recognized for bringing in the highest number of truant students in the entire city. Officer White said they often find truants wandering around Best Buy in Tenleytown, shops in Georgetown or McDonald's in Friendship Heights. She said she knows the repeat offenders and in some cases has their parents' phone numbers memorized. Both officers have established relationships with the deans of local schools and …

The luncheon for Second District officers is planned for August 9.
The annual Citizens Advisory Council Second District police appreciation luncheon is planned for Aug. 9 and organizers are seeking volunteers and support. The lunch this year will feature a salad bar "where officers can serve themselves with healthy salads," according to a notice about the event. Volunteers are needed to take shifts to serve officers and to help restock the salad bar. If you would like to make a donation, organizers are seeking salads (like fruit salad) or monitary donations. Water bottles and other drinks are also welcome contributions. The luncheon will be at the Second District Police Station at 3320 Idaho Ave. NW. The federal grant will pay for part of the salary of five new DC officers for three years.
DC was among some 220 cities to be awarded funding to hire veterans through the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. The grants will allow cities to hire veterans who have served "at least 180 days since September 11, 2001" according the the media advisory from the White House. DC will receive approximately $625,000 in federal monies, which will pay for "just under half of the salary of the officers" for a three-year period, according to an MPD press release. “The Metropolitan Police Department is pleased to be the recipient of a COPS Hiring Program award which allows us not only to put five additional officers on the street, but also to support the brave men and women who serve in the military,” said …

A Georgetown student was sexually assaulted on 36th Street just north of N Street early Sunday morning.
A Georgetown University student was sexually assaulted off campus in West Georgetown just after 2 a.m. Sunday, according to the Department of Public Safety. The assault took place off campus on 36th Street, just north of N Street. According to the incident report on the DPS website, the victim was injured in the attack. University DPS and DC Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) searched the area for the suspect with negative results. MPD is investigating the incident. DPS notified the school community in an alert sent around 3:30 p.m. Sunday, according to student newspaper The Hoya. An abandoned suitcase was investigated in the East Village.
Update, 12:14 p.m. The explosives team from the Metropolitan Police Department has cleared the intersection of 31st Street and N Street NW in Georgetown. A suitcase found on the sidewalk near that intersection was investigated as a suspicious package on Friday morning after a call was placed to police just before 10:30 a.m. The area was deemed safe after the investigation, a spokesman for the police department said. The Second District recognized four officers whose hard work made them stand out over the last two months.
Each month at the Second District Citizens Advisory Council meeting, Commander Michael Reese recognizes one or more officers for his or her hard work over the previous month. The 2D Officers honored for the last two months were: Officer Alton Bryant, Jr: On Jan. 5, Officer Bryant chased down and arrested a man who had kicked and broken the glass door at the Second District HQ. Officer Miriam Wishnick: According to CAC Chair George Corey, Wishnick was recognized for her "consistent positive attitude and unstoppable determination in crime investigations." The Citizens Advisory Council gave out certificates to five individuals for officers of the month and detectives of the month.
Each month, the Second District police recognize officers and detectives who have excelled in their duties, often going above and beyond what is required. The Citizens Advisory Council along with Second District Commander Michael Reese presents an award certificate at a monthly meeting. Officers of the Month (July and August combined) Officer Michael Handy Commander Reese said Officer Handy's work can be seen throughout the Second District, where he is "consistently making lockups." Updated 7:30 p.m. Police are investigating the death of Viola Herms Drath, 91, in Georgetown. According to a news release from the Metropolitan Police Department, her death is being investigated as a homicide after an autopsy Saturday. On Friday, Drath’s second husband, Albrecht Gero Muth, sent an email to friends and neighbors about his wife's passing. He wrote: I'm sad to advise that my dear wife of nearly 25 years passed away last night. Funeral arrangements are pending. Police have told The Washington Post that they have not made any arrests yet in the case.
