The project which restored O and P streets, while maintaining historic integrity, was honored with a 2013 Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation for design and construction.
The O and P Streets Rehabilitation Project was among several District projects recognized last week with a 2013 Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation. “We are honoring the return to glory of some of our most cherished neighborhood landmarks and institutions,” Mayor Vincent Gray said in a press release. “Historic Preservation is a driving force in the development and growth of the District of Columbia as more and more people are drawn to the vibrant historic neighborhoods of our beautiful city.” The Georgetown project restored O and P streets in Georgetown, making the roads much friendlier to drivers, while retaining historic items like cobblestones and a rare remaining example of streetcar “conduit track system” in the United …

The O and P Street project officially wrapped up in September.
Even after over 18 grueling months of construction noise, dust and parking restrictions, Georgetowners are so pleased with the result of the O and P Street project, that the Citizens Association of Georgetown (CAG) is nominating it for the 2013 District of Columbia Awards for Excellence in Historic Preservation. "I think most people would agree, it's a model of rehabilitation and restoration," said Pam Moore on behalf of CAG. CAG received the Advisory Neighborhood Commission's (ANC) support in commending the District Department of Transportation for its project, which involved reconstruction and rehabilitation of O and P Streets and their historic streetcar tracks in the West Village. The team behind O and P Street "clearly shared our …

The O and P Street ribbon cutting was Tuesday.
With the snip of a pair of oversized scissors, District and community leaders brought to an end 18 months of construction on O and P Street, NW in Georgetown. The project was more than 20 years in the making, pre-dating long-serving Ward 2 Councilman Jack Evans' time on the District Council. At the ceremony Tuesday, Evans joked that the first meeting he had on the project was with President Washington and Pierre L'Enfant. Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner Jeff Jones, whose district included the project area, reflected on the project's role in connecting the current streets with the past when streetcars rode throughout. He also said the complexity of the construction brought together the community. "To me this project connects neighbors …
The bus route changed during construction on the O and P Street project.
The G2 bus will provide a direct route to Georgetown University once again by late December. During the O and P Street construction project, the route's terminus was at Dumbarton Street and Wisconsin Avenue, NW. "The G2 will be returning to its old route by the end of December. It will run the same route it did before the O&P project began," wrote Caroline Lukas, a Metro spokeswoman, in an email to Patch. The following stops will be restored when the full G2 route returns: The shortened route went into effect in February of this year. The buses require a 12-foot-wide lane and had on occasion become stuck in the cramped roads between construction equipment parked on one side of the street and SUVs parked on the opposite side. Officials cut …

The ceremony would mark the end of the 18-month project.
The long-awaited day has arrived: on Sept. 18 at 10 a.m. officials will mark the ceremonial end of Georgetown's O and P Street project some 19 months after they broke ground. The date is still tentative, depending on Mayor Vincent Gray, Councilman Jack Evans and several other key officials' schedules. The project involved the restoration of the historic streetcar tracks and repairs to the streets and infrastructure on stretches of O and P Street in the West Village. Work began Feb. 28, 2011 at 36th and P Streets and advanced through the neighborhood from there. A few hiccups along the way included the poor condition of many of the historic streetcar tracks and the discovery of buried tracks on streets they were not expected to exist on. …

The 3200 block of O Street is slated for the next round of construction
The O and P Street Project marches on and this Thursday project managers will hold a meeting with residents and businesses of the 3200 block of O Street to discuss construction timing and staging. The meeting is at 9:30 a.m. at Saint John's Episcopal Church (3240 O St., NW). Businesses on the 3200 block of P Street had a similar meeting before construction began there in February. ANC Commissioner Ed Solomon, whose store Wedding Creations and Anthony's Tuxedos is on the 3200 block of P Street, helped coordinate communications between the businesses and the project team. Solomon worked to reduce the burden on businesses and residents as work progressed on his block and will be doing the same for the O Street businesses. When neighbors …

Several residents of the West Village took to the neighborhood listserv last week to vent.
Residents of the West Village, specifically several who live on the 3300 block of P Street, aired their grievances last week and demanded more accountability from the O&P Street Project managers. At issue is the ongoing and incomplete work on the 3300 block of P Street even as contractors move to new sections of the neighborhood. "Whoever is running this project seems to have a tough time finishing tasks," wrote Paul St. Lawrence in a letter he sent to several local officials and which he shared on the Georgetown forum. Another resident of the West Village responded, "The haphazard nature of the work being undertaken would be laughable were it not so pitiful." In an email response to St. Lawrence, the O&P Street project team expressed and…

Construction commences in earnest this week on the 3200 block of P Street.
A cluster of small businesses met with project representatives Monday to address their concerns over the impact the O and P Street Project will have on their shops and customers. The O and P Street Project has progressed from the mainly residential parts of P Street to the block of shops and that includes Just Paper & Tea, Ella Rue and Fleurir Chocolate, among others. Construction is scheduled to commence Wednesday beginning at Wisconsin Avenue and working West on P Street towards 33rd Street. "The main concern of businesses is, when they shut down the street where businesses are, that obviously eliminates parking," explained ANC Commissioner Ed Solomon whose store Wedding Creations and Anthony's Tuxedos is on that block of P Street. …

The news you missed from the first advisory neighborhood commission meeting of 2012.
The Georgetown Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC2E) provided updates on a slew of topics ranging from changes to the Circulator route to proposed traffic pattern changes at Safeway, in addition to hosting the General Services Administration for a discussion on the West Power Plant. Circulator DDOT's recent adjustments to the Circulator in Georgetown reduced the number of stops in the neighborhood. The agency has now reversed its decision after a traffic study indicated the removed stops did not have a significant impact on the Circulator's level of service, according to ANC2E Commissioner Ron Lewis. "The change that we saw was minimal compared to the inconvenience that members of the community experienced," said DDOT spokesperson …

Residents are warned to remove anything they would like to save from their tree boxes
If you live on the 3600 block of O Street, it's time to clear out your tree boxes- save your stone squirrel ornament or your guerrilla garden basil. The O and P Street project is set to begin work on the sidewalks, which will also impact the tree boxes. Betsy Emes, the chair of Trees for Georgetown, emailed the neighborhood forum about the impending changes. The street tree boxes will be enlarged to standard size where possible, though some will remain the same size if space is an issue. In some area new tree boxes will be added and in others current boxes will be removed. Any items surrounding the trees or planted or place in the tree box will be removed, but the project management team will notify residents prior to any such work. Emes…
