Owner Mino Sarano wanted a more creative design for his new restaurant's sign.
A restaurant's effort to expand into a second location on M Street is hitting a roadblock from a board that oversees design in the Georgetown historic district. Since Mino Sarano, owner of Café Tu O Tu, decided to expand his restaurant with Cafe Tu-o-Tu Express at 3421 M St., he has met resistance from the Old Georgetown Board (OGB). His goal is to create his own sign design for his restaurant. “The signs I have to put up, they won’t allow,” said Sarano. “It can only be a basic design. You cannot be really creative.” The OGB, part of the U.S Commission of Fine Arts (CFA), oversees design review of projects in Georgetown and has strict guidelines for commercial venues’ approaches to expanding businesses. “The purpose is to preserve the …

The Old Georgetown Board shared concerns that were raised by neighbors about the proposed massing of the building at 1700 Wisconsin Avenue.
Dumbarton Oaks will have to reconsider the massing and proposed height of the planned addition for its property at 1700 Wisconsin Avenue after the Old Georgetown Board meeting Thursday. The 1950s-era building, built in the Colonial style, has been purchased by Dumbarton Oaks to house its fellows. The redesign plan for 1700 Wisconsin Ave. calls for a "comprehensive modernization," including window replacements, a brand-new geo-thermal heating and cooling system, and 25 residential units to house fellows. A fourth floor would be added to the existing structure, as well as another side addition, and a tall, modern glass window would run up the center of the building. A vertical garden is planned for the west facade. At the OGB meeting …

Tudor Place offered its second presentation before the Old Georgetown Board on the proposed master preservation plan.
At the conclusion of the almost two hours of presentations and comments, the Old Georgetown Board (OGB) told the representatives of Tudor Place to move forward with the architectural design phase and to return for review in the future. The master preservation plan does not currently fall under the Old Georgetown Act and as such, the board can merely make suggestions. When the project returns with a detailed architectural plan, the board can then require adjustments and modifications to proposed structures. Leslie Buhler, the executive director of Tudor Place Historic House and Garden, told the OGB that she and her team at Tudor Place had given "honest and thoughtful consideration" to the board's previous comments. The plan has a few tweaks…

The board met on Wednesday to discuss this project and others.
After reviewing plans to remodel the building at 1700 Wisconsin Ave., the Old Georgetown Board gave project developers feedback and asked for more input from nearby residents. No vote to approve the plans was taken. The 1950s-era building, built in the Colonial style, has been purchased by Dumbarton Oaks to house its fellows. Architect Ralph Cunningham, of D.C.-based Cunningham-Quill Architects, presented the remodel plans to the board and said developers planned to hold a meeting with the community on the redesign sometime in the next four weeks, but did not offer a specific date. Anne Lewis, one of three members of the Old Georgetown Board, called Dumbarton Oaks an asset to the community. She voiced some aesthetic concerns with the …

At the Old Georgetown Board meeting Thursday, EastBanc, Inc. responded to neighbors' criticism about the design for the building planned for 3601 M St., NW.
At the Old Georgetown Board meeting Thursday, Anthony Lanier of EastBanc, Inc. stood before a group of objecting neighbors and the board commissioners saying he, too, objected to the current design of his planned condo building for the Exxon site at 3601 M St. This was the third time the EastBanc building had been before the OGB and this time it returned with a letter of objection from the Advisory Neighborhood Commission. One neighbor after another made fervent appeals to the OGB Thursday, expressing concerns over the height and massing of the building, over the design and the buildings role as a "gateway" to Georgetown. One new objection was that the building's industrial design would fit in more along the industrial waterfront area …

The Old Georgetown Board reviewed the updated plans for the Georgetown Post Office and sent the architect off with homework.
Eastbanc's plans for the Georgetown Post Office have faced several recent setbacks, first the Office of Planning (OP) decided that a commercial use was not appropriate and now the Old Georgetown Board (OGB) had plenty to criticize about the new residential design. The new planned structure will be a three-story residential building, home to nine condos to meet OP's demands. CORE Architect's project architect, Guy Martin, faced the OGB Thursday and left without project approval. Before they got to work, board member Stephen Vanze commented, “You're able to get a lot done in a month,” in reference to the quick switch from commercial to residential designs. At the previous meeting when the design still called for a commercial building, Vanze …

At the Dec. 2 meeting, the Old Georgetown Board (OGB) reviewed almost 20 projects in Georgetown. The Georgetown Post Office concept plan earned high marks and approval in its first go-around.
At the Dec. 2 meeting, the Old Georgetown Board (OGB) weighed-in on nearly 20 projects in Georgetown ranging from solar panels on a residential property to the concept plan for the Georgetown Post Office. The first agenda item, the C&O Canal visitor's center signage received a swift approval from the OGB Thursday. Park service officers were asked to keep the presentation short; in a matter of minutes the OGB approved the plan. The board spent significantly more time reviewing the Georgetown Post Office plans presented by CORE Architect's project architect, Guy Martin. The OGB took comments from Tim Denee of the D.C. Historic Preservation Office (HPO) who raised concerns about removing the current addition. Commissioner Tom Birch from the …

The ANC-2E meeting Nov. 29 will cover issues ranging from road races and restaurants that adversely impact Georgetown to updated plans for the Post Office building.
Keep your fingers crossed for a short Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC-2E) meeting Nov. 29. The full agenda is not heavy on neighbor vs. neighbor drama about rear additions or view sheds. It does, however, include a discussion on Go Fresh, formerly the despised Philly Pizza, a comment period on the inconvenience of large-scale road races to the neighborhood and a review of the concept plan for the Old Post Office. It could be a long one yet. Two of the more controversial issues come in the new business section of the agenda. For several meetings now various ANC commissioners have protested about the effect races like the Nation's Tri and the Marine Corps Marathon have on Georgetown. Road closures and traffic back-ups are a headache …
