Police: West Village resident alerted officers to man breaking into car.
A Georgetown resident's quick actions Monday resulted in the apprehension and arrest of a man suspected of breaking into cars on the 3400 block of N Street, NW, according to police. The suspect had multiple prior arrests, according to police. Officer Antonial Atkins of the Metropolitan Police Department 2nd District wrote in an email to the community: "On Monday November 5th, 2012 at approximately 1400 hrs a Citizen that lives in the 3400 Block of N St NW observed a suspect break into a car. During this criminal act, I was driving west bound in the 3400 block of N St. NW and was flagged down. The suspect was then arrested and charged with multiple offenses. Police are seeking public assistance in locating and identifying a person of interest in a sexual assault the took place around 10:30 p.m. June 30 on the 2400 block of M Street in the West End, just east of Georgetown. In the weekend crime report summary on the Second District listserv there was a sexual assault reported in the 2400 block of M Street and the location was listed as "Hotel/Motel/Etc." The Georgetown Westin Hotel is in the 2300 block of M Street and the Fairmont Washington is in the 2400 block of M Street. No one at either hotel could be reached for comment Monday. Georgetown experienced crime rates similar to the Second District as a whole
Crime across the Second District decreased by 12 percent in the last 30 days compared to the same period last year, according to a report created by the Metropolitan Police Department. Property crime, including burglaries, dipped by 15 percent this month compared to last year, but violent crimes like roberries increased by 20 percent in that same period. The Second District recognized four officers whose hard work made them stand out over the last two months.
Each month at the Second District Citizens Advisory Council meeting, Commander Michael Reese recognizes one or more officers for his or her hard work over the previous month. The 2D Officers honored for the last two months were: Officer Alton Bryant, Jr: On Jan. 5, Officer Bryant chased down and arrested a man who had kicked and broken the glass door at the Second District HQ. Officer Miriam Wishnick: According to CAC Chair George Corey, Wishnick was recognized for her "consistent positive attitude and unstoppable determination in crime investigations." Compared to the same 30-day period in 2010, Georgetown saw a dramatic increase in certain types of crimes in 2011.
Though total crime decreased in Georgetown's Police Service Area 206 (PSA 206), the neighborhood saw a dramatic increase in violent crime and burglaries for the 30-day period from May 23 through June 21 of 2011, when compared to the same time in 2010. Commander Reese did not provide his usual update and explanation of crime trends at the monthly Citizens Advisory Council meeting last week, because Chief Cathy Lanier was on hand to discuss district realignment. Property crime was up 3 percent overall in the second district in June 2011 compared to June 2010, but violent crime was down 14 percent. The overall crime rate increased by less than 1 percent.
