Police: Second District Sees Increase in Robberies, Sexual Assaults

Despite increases in certain areas, overall crime is down 8 percent year to date.

The Metropolitan Police Department's Second District saw an 8 percent increase in robberies over the same time period last year and five reported sexual assaults compared to zero during the same one-month period in 2011. But Second District (2D) Commander Michael Reese told the Citizens Advisory Council (CAC) meeting last Thursday that year-to-date 2D has seen an 8 percent overall decrease in crime. Many of the robberies were taking place in the Ward 2's "club areas" or places with late-night activity and bars, Reese noted. Police records provided at the CAC meeting show that half of the eight police service areas that comprise 2D had a reported sexual assault. Police: Woman Sexually Assaulted on Cherry Hill Lane in Georgetown

The incident occurred Sunday at approximately 4:10 a.m., police say

The Metropolitan Police Department’s Sexual Assault Unit is investigating the report of a sexual assault in the 3200 block of Cherry Hill Lane, NW. Cherry Hill Lane is south of Grace Street, just east of Cecil Place. The female victim told police that she was walking in the area at 4:10 a.m. on Sunday. According to police news release, "an unknown male suspect approached her from behind and groped her. The suspect then fled." The suspect is described as a white or Hispanic male, with "dark straight shaggy hair," between approximately 5-foot-9 to 6 feet tall, with a slim build and dark eyes. Police: Woman Sexually Assaulted on C&O Canal

The incident took place on the C&O Canal just off of 31st Street on July 7.

The U.S. Park Police is investigating the report of sexual assault in the early morning hours of July 7 on the C&O Canal just off of 31st Street, NW in Georgetown. The victim told police that a man approached her on 31st and M Streets around 1 a.m. July 7 and offered to help her locate her friends. The suspect led her to the C&O Canal, pushed her in the bushes and sexually assaulted her, according to police. The woman was able to get away from the suspect, who was last seen on the C&O Canal at 31st St., NW, the release states. The suspect is described as a white male, approximately five feet, nine inches in height, overweight with a "heavy Australian accent." He is described as having short dark hair and a "scruffy beard." Sketch of Georgetown Sexual Assault Suspect Released

The victim was jogging when she was attacked from behind, police say.

The U.S. Park Police released a sketch of the suspect in their ongoing investigation of a sexual assault that occurred Wednesday night on the Capitol Crescent Trail near the Georgetown waterfront. A female jogger told police she was attacked from behind and placed in a chokehold at about 9:16 p.m. The suspect is described as a black male with medium-colored skin, between 5-foot-8 and 5-foot-11, and weighing approximately 180 to 200 pounds. He is described as having a muscular/fit build, with three to four inch dreadlocks and "a light scruffy beard." At the time of the attack, he was wearing a white shirt and black jersey shorts. Woman Sexually Assaulted Near Georgetown Waterfront

The victim was jogging when she was attacked from behind, police say.

The U.S. Park Police is investigating the report of a sexual assault that occurred Wednesday night on the Capitol Crescent Trail near the Georgetown waterfront. A female jogger told police she was attacked from behind and placed in a chokehold at about 9:16 p.m. The woman lost consciousness and awoke with her pants down and the suspect fondling her, according to a news release. The victim screamed, and her attacker ran away toward Fletcher’s Boat House, the release states. Recent Crime Raises Questions Among Georgetown University Students

Sexual assault and robbery, on same night, 'disconcerting,' student says.

Georgetown University students said they have become disheartened and disappointed because of a sexual assault and an armed robbery occurring near their campus on the same night. "They tell us when we come here it's a safe place, safe campus, and supposedly the safest neighborhood in all of D.C.," sophomore Evan Monod said. "In the end, although it doesn't make me think Georgetown is less safe, it does raise a couple questions and I will be more careful when walking around at night." Georgetown Student Sexually Assaulted Off Campus

A Georgetown student was sexually assaulted on 36th Street just north of N Street early Sunday morning.

A Georgetown University student was sexually assaulted off campus in West Georgetown just after 2 a.m. Sunday, according to the Department of Public Safety. The assault took place off campus on 36th Street, just north of N Street. According to the incident report on the DPS website, the victim was injured in the attack. University DPS and DC Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) searched the area for the suspect with negative results. MPD is investigating the incident. DPS notified the school community in an alert sent around 3:30 p.m. Sunday, according to student newspaper The Hoya. Body of Lululemon Employee Discovered on Betheda Row, Georgetown Store Closed

The body of a female Lululemon employee was found in the Bethesda store early Saturday morning.

Update, 11:19 a.m. Sunday: The Lululemon Athletica stores in Georgetown and Clarendon were closed again this morning. -- At 8:12 a.m., police were called to Lululemon Athletica at 4856 Bethesda Ave. where they found one deceased female employee in her 20s or 30s at the rear of the store, according to Capt. Paul Starks, a Montgomery County police spokesman. Calls to Lululemon communications were not immediately returned. The Georgetown Lululemon store was closed as of 3:30 p.m. Saturday, though it is not clear whether or not it was related to the Bethesda incident.
