Luxury Sportswear Shop Opens in Chevy Chase

One of Chevy Chase's newest businesses brings a sporty edge to Friendship Heights' lineup of elite boutiques.

Chevy Chase's lineup of luxury clothing shops has a new, sporty arrival: DJ Bennett, an appointment-only, high-end sportswear boutique. Located in the newly renovated Chevy Chase Pavilion, the store, "which opened its doors in September, specializes in luxury athletic wear and equipment ranging from snowboarding goggles with built-in GPS capabilities ($450) to neoprene surf suits ($650)," The Washington Post reported. Owner Dawn Bennett, a former competitive swimmer, "has assembled a roster of sporting experts and professional athletes to help guide shoppers through the company’s inventory, which includes items from such brands as Ghurka, Louis Vuitton and Beretta," The Post added. "My whole life I’ve actually been shopping for something …

Switzerland: Not So Different from Georgetown

On a recent trip to Switzerland, I catalogued the various stores that also call Georgetown home.

You might have noticed a photo of my guest editor at the top of Georgetown Patch for the week after Christmas and over the New Year holiday. That's because I was galavanting around parts of Switzerland with my husband and close friends. While there I could not help but be reminded of Georgetown.  From the quaint boutiques, to the high-end stores, to the well-healed shoppers walking cobblestone streets, Luzern and Zurich in Switzerland offered frequent reminders of my usual haunts in the USofA. Georgetown boasts some of the oldest structures in the District, but pales in comparison to the European buildings dating back to 1500 and 1600s. Yet, the same stores you find in Georgetown call Luzern and Zurich home. Oddly, in Zurich, you might …

Georgetown Gatherings and Goings-On Dec. 17-19

Since Georgetowners are always organized and on-top of things, I'm sure you have all of your holiday shopping finished and are just puzzled about what to do this weekend. We've got you covered.

With a mere nine days until Christmas and two weeks until New Year's Eve, the holidays are upon us. While I am certain you have dotted your i's and crossed your t's, there are probably a few of you busy people out there still trying to wrap up holiday shopping and errand-running. Shop locally and try to relax a bit with a few last events before Christmas and NYE. Friday is the last Gallery Gaze of 2010. Put on your boots, grab your earmuffs and take a leisurely stroll through Georgetown. Enjoy something visually exciting that is not red, green or covered in glitter (everything has its place).  Saturday evening watch the Flying Dog and Brightest Young Things lights parade or join in yourself. The mobile holiday lights extravaganza begins at…

Georgetown Gatherings and Goings-On Nov. 26 - 28

When tourists and crazed shoppers take over, laying low may be the best option.

If you stayed in Georgetown for the holiday, you are undoubtedly dreading leaving your home to find out of state (out of federal district?) plates, a massive line at Georgetown Cupcake and crowded sidewalks. You might think twice about venturing out, but if you do there are several good local options. Looking for Black Friday sales nearby? Check out our insiders' list of sales and deals and follow our woman on the street on twitter to avoid the lines. When everyone else is thinking in red and green, if you're thinking white weddings and something blue, try the White Friday sale at Chevy Chase Bridal.  Or if you are still on the market, it's Open Season tonight at L2. Open to all, come dressed as hunter or huntee and dance the night away. …

Black Friday Hits Georgetown

Insiders know where to find all of the best deals. Outwit those tourists.

Friday, Nov. 26 marks what is usually the busiest shopping day of the year: Black Friday. Georgetown shops will no doubt be even busier than usual, but here are some deals that will make it worth braving the crowds: Stock up on statement pieces at jewelry and accessories boutique Charm, which will stay open a full two hours later (until 9 p.m.) and will offer 10 percent off purchases of $100 or more. The Ralph Lauren Rugby store will offer 25 percent off all merchandise between Tuesday, Nov. 23 and Monday, Nov. 29. Hu's Shoes and and Hu's Wear will kick off a sale with 30 to 50 percent off most of the fall and winter lines from designers such as Alexander McQueen, Proenza Schouler and Brian Atwood. Glam vintage mecca Annie Creamcheese (…

Georgetown Gatherings and Goings-On Nov. 19 - 21

Lots of great Georgetown events and few items worth venturing outside the village to check out.

This weekend before Thanksgiving, take the time to enjoy a few non-mandatory events, unlike the impending work/family/school holiday parties. Friday is yet again the Georgetown Gallery Gaze. Go now because you probably will not have time in December or the early new year to make it.  Friday, you could also make a trip to Blues Alley. For $28 plus the cost of drinks you can take in the jazz of the Jeff "Tain" Watts Quartet from 8 p.m. until 10 p.m.  Saturday morning, try a family-friendly event at St. John's Church. Beginning at 10:30 a.m. Kaydee Puppetswill perform for kids and parents alike. The event benefits the children's section of the Georgetown Neighborhood Library.   Saturday evening, try venturing outside the village for your …

Grocery Store as Classroom

Reading, Writing and Rutabagas

With four mouths to feed, our days usually include a stop at the grocery store. I try to time our shopping so that I only have to take the baby and the two-year-old, but sometimes I have to take all four kids on the way home from school. Rather than look at this trip as a chore, I like to think of the grocery store as a classroom. By taking a little extra time and not rushing through the aisles, we have the chance to learn something and have some fun along the way. The produce section is a panoply of colors, smells and textures. I let the baby hold and feel the fruits and vegetables, naming them for her. My toddler helps me count out the apples. I show my daughter how to pick a cantaloupe by smelling the end of it. With my oldest son, we …
