Georgetown Gatherings and Goings-On Jan. 7-9

The holidays are over and life slows down for a bit. There are still a few ways to enjoy yourself or work toward those New Year's resolutions.

The holidays are behind us and a new year sits in front of us with all its promise. Make the most of the moment with several local opportunities to enjoy life and work on a few resolutions this weekend. Promise yourself you would make working out a normal part of your week? Stop by Down Dog Yoga for a less expensive community class every Friday at 4 p.m. Or check out the Georgetown group runs that meet at Georgetown Running Company and break off into groups based on speed and experience (Saturdays at 9 a.m.). Singing for their Supper

The Duke Ellington School of the Arts needs to raise $500,000 by January to spare eight teachers' jobs from the chopping block. Students and faculty are hoping the all-school collaborative production of "Dreamgirls" will help.

Less than two weeks remain until the opening night of the all-school collaborative production of "Dreamgirls," and the Duke Ellington School of the Arts is buzzing with a sense of purpose.  During the Tuesday night tech rehearsal, students stood on stage, repeating the same verse over and over, as the sound expert perfected what the audience will eventually hear. "I'm looking for something baby, something like a real nice surprise. I'm looking for something baby, something that you have got!" At 6 p.m., they looked tired, but continued to smile.
