Veterans Day 2012 (Observed): What's Open, What's Closed

Veterans Day 2012 is Sunday, Nov. 11, but the local and federal government will observe the holiday Monday, Nov. 12.

In observation of the Veterans Day holiday, the federal government is closed Monday and most local government agencies will not be providing services. Government Agency Closures: D.C. Public Schools and offices are closed. The D.C. Public Libraries are closed. All Department of Motor Vehicles locations are closed. The Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs is closed. Service Interruptions: Metrorail: According to the WMATA website, trains will operate on a Saturday schedule Monday, with scheduled trackwork on the Red, Green and Orange lines. Riders benefit from off-peak fares all day and free parking at Metro-operated facilities. Metrobus: According to the WMATA website, "Metrobus service will operate on a "Saturday Supplemental" …

Obama: Veterans Teach Us 'There is No Threat We Cannot Meet'

The president placed a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns and offered remarks at Arlington National Cemetery's Memorial Amphitheater on Friday.

President Barack Obama, in his remarks Friday at Arlington National Cemetery’s Memorial Amphitheater, compared today’s servicemen and women to the Greatest Generation that faced the hardships of World War II. Obama also noted the upcoming holidays would serve as a season of homecomings following the end of the war in Iraq and the anticipated withdrawal of combat troops from Afghanistan. Over the next five years, 1 million troops will return to civilian life. “This generation of service members – this 9/11 Generation – has borne the burden of our security during a hard decade of sacrifice. Thousands Honor Veterans at Arlington National Cemetery

Young and old gathered to remember and honor America's armed services.

Families and strangers, youth groups and veterans, and people of all political persuasions came together Friday at Arlington National Cemetery’s Memorial Amphitheater to honor the men and women who have served this country. The National Veterans Day Observance ceremony featured a traditional laying of the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns and remarks by President Barack Obama. Thursday, Nov. 11, is Veterans Day. In our nation's capital, there are many ways to honor the service of our veterans and the sacrifices of their families.

Thursday, Nov. 11 is Veterans Day. The federal and District governments are closed as are D.C. schools. Today is a day to remember the commitment and service of America's Armed Forces. Ceremonies throughout D.C. and in neighboring Arlington are open to the public and will honor America's veterans. D.C. DPW Says Free Parking and No Trash Pickup Veterans Day

In honor of Veterans Day Nov. 11, the Department of Public Works will cease several services Thursday. Service will resume Friday, Nov. 12.

On Veterans Day, Nov. 11, the Department of Public Works (DPW) will not collect trash and recycling, however leaf collection will continue in "area A" neighborhoods.  Services will resume Nov. 12 in a sliding schedule; Thursday's collections will be made Friday and Friday's collections will be made Saturday. A friendly reminder, trash and recycling containers should not be put out for collection before 6:30 p.m. the night before collection and should be removed by 8 p.m. on the collection day. Ask your neighbors to help out if you are out of town or working late. On the up side to the service cuts for the holiday: free parking and no towing. That means parking meters, residential parking restrictions and rush hour lane violations will not …
