Mayor Brings 2014 Budget Town Hall to Ward 2

Mayor Vincent Gray will address budget issues related to Ward 2 residents.

Mayor Vincent Gray is going around the city to each ward to discuss his 2014 budget and will be coming to Ward 2 on Saturday, April 20. The meeting at the Charles Sumner School 1201 17th St. NW will run from 2 to 4 p.m. In March, Gray released his $10.1 billion Fiscal Year 2014 budget. The budget does not include any new taxes. The format at previous budget town halls in recent years was a presentation by the mayor and chief financial officer followed by questions from attendees. Ward 2 Councilman Jack Evans responded positively to the budget when the mayor sent it to the District Council last month. Evans was particularly pleased about funding to keep the DMV in Georgetown and expanded hours and days of service to seven days a week at all…

Early Voting is an Easy Option for DC Residents

Ward 2 residents can cast an early ballot at One Judiciary Square this week.

Some District of Columbia residents are opting to vote in this week’s early election because it’s more convenient than waiting to cast their ballot on Nov. 6. Early voting began Monday and goes until Saturday, Oct. 27. Ward 2 voters can go to the Old Council Chambers at One Judiciary Square 441 4th St., NW, from 8:30 a.m.- 7 p.m. this week to cast a ballot. Ward 2 resident Marlon Smoker, who was walking out of One Judiciary Square on Tuesday afternoon with an “I Voted” sticker on his chest, said he chose to vote this week because he was already going to be at Judiciary Square serving jury duty. Smoker said he voted during his lunch break. Others have voted this week because they are ready to get the election process moving. Geneva …

Councilmember Jack Evans and Chancellor Kaya Henderson will speak at the event

Ward 2 Councilmember Jack Evans and Chancellor Kaya Henderson will offer updates on the state of Ward 2's public schools and talk about their future during a meeting Wednesday evening. Principals from neighborhood schools will also be on hand to answer questions, including Hyde-Addison's Dana Nerenberg. Nerenberg spoke briefly at the Georgetown Advisory Neighborhood Commission meeting about the new gymnasium and library coming to the small Georgetown campus. This summer they will be forming the school improvement team —made up of staff, administrators and community leaders— to advise the construction process. Nerenberg said she hoped construction could begin in a year's time. The Ward 2 event begins at 5 p.m. with a Principal Meet & Greet…

Herb Miller Suggests Using Remaining $11 Million Downtown TIF for Georgetown's Wisconsin Avenue

Leaders in real estate and government brainstormed about the future of Wisconsin Avenue Tuesday night at the old Georgetown Theater.

Wisconsin Avenue could be a lively part of Georgetown filled with a mixture of exciting restaurants from local restaurateurs, independent businesses and everyday chains, with proper planning, vision, coordination and financial incentive to the tune of $11 million from the District. That was the gist of the Citizens Association of Georgetown meeting in the old Georgetown Theater Tuesday. Developer Herb Miller, retail broker John Asadoorian and Ward 2 Council member Jack Evans discussed the issues and potential of Wisconsin Avenue at the run down former theater. Both Miller and Asadoorian told crowded room of interested neighbors that improvements will require cooperation and collaboration among property owners, retail brokers, local …

As an attendee of the meeting, I was disappointed that Georgetown citizens did not have a chance to ask questions and express their views. Many of my fellow Georgetown residents have expressed their dismay at the continuing loss of desirable stores in our neighborhood as well as the increase of "fly-by-night" clothing and shoe stores that by enlarge we do not patronize. The proposed replacement …   more ›

Updated: Fiona Greig Withdraws from Ward 2 Race

Greig tells supporters that she did not expect the 'intimidation campaign' from the Evans campaign, which denies any such efforts.

Updated 10:27 a.m. Fiona Greig's campaign was never a "reality," according to Tom Lindenfeld, a political consultant for Jack Evans' campaign. Lindenfeld denied the allegations Greig raised in her parting note to supporters, including that the Evans campaign had hired a private investigator to dig into her personal life. "There’s no private investigator involved anywhere, that’s total fiction," said Lindenfeld in a phone interview with Patch. He said the campaign sent a staffer to obtain the finance report that Greig filed to which she inadvertently attached a list of targeted donors. The list labeled donors as "homosexual" and "super wealthy." Lindenfeld denied doing any opposition research against Greig. "There are things that as a …

Fiona Greig Is Running for the Ward 2 Council Seat

Greig: 'It's time to think more boldly about our future as a city and to pivot to a broader strategic agenda.'

Fiona Greig officially declared her candidacy for the Ward 2 District Council seat, held by 20-plus-year incumbent Jack Evans. She wrote on her Facebook Page Friday, "It's official. I am a candidate for Ward 2 DC Council." Thursday in a post on Greater Greater Washington she laid out her plan and the core elements of her candidacy. Greig identified three primary areas of importance to Ward 2 that she argues Evans has failed to address. First, Greig says the Council member neglects the important work of retaining families, which she says must be accomplished by focusing on middle schools now that many elementary schools are successful. She says "some" council members choose to disengage when it comes to schools. Next, she calls for smarter…
