New Georgetown Yoga Studio Opens Today

The East Village studio is at 2603 P St., NW.

Georgetown Yoga opens officially Monday at 2603 P St., filling the space once home to Haute Fabrics. The new studio comes to Georgetown thanks to owners Eli Hengst, who once owned Mendocino Grille on M Street, and yogi Alex Paraskevas, owner of Yoga Chai Adams Morgan. “I was a pretty serious yoga skeptic, but after a few months of regular practice with Alex at his Adams Morgan studio, the positive effects on yoga on my body and mind were real, totally undeniable, and wholly positive. And when I saw the space on P Street - just around the corner from my house - I saw the opportunity to bring to others the same challenging, deep, classical yoga experience, free of pretense,” said Hengst in a prepared statement. The studio, just across from …

Down Dog Yoga, located behind the Dean & Deluca, will help the program through fundraising and marketing support.

Keeping It Simple

Just visit the local library and let a kid be a kid!

A few months ago, I received a pamphlet from a nearby school. It was for a Toddler Summer Camp. I had been thinking about this particular school for my two-year-old so I thought this might be a viable option. She could go to their two week summer camp and we could "test the waters" for this school. I looked at the curriculum (well, as much of a curriculum as a two year old can have anyway!) and it seemed pretty cool. Then, I looked at the price. It's a two-week (10 day) camp from 9 to 11:45 a.m. and it's $600! Really?? $600 for 10 days?? And not even three hours a day? Believe it or not, I actually considered it. I asked a few moms and they told me this was not an unreasonable price for a DC summer camp. I figured if she absolutely hated …

Georgetown Pilates Set to Expand

The tucked away yoga studio will soon offer group mat classes.

Georgetown Pilates has called Hamilton Court (between M and N Streets) its home for the past two years. Now the studio is adding an additional space next to its current unit at 1228 31st St. The plan is to convert the current space, which has been used for private apparatus-based pilates, into a group exercise area for mat-based pilates and some yoga classes. The new studio will then hold all the bars and apparatus equipment for the private lessons to continue. Alma Ramos said she and her business partner, Heather Perry, met when they were both working at Sports Club LA. "We are both former ballet dancers and we came to pilates for the same reasons," she said. The two left Sports Club LA together and with the help of a supportive client, …

Doga: Strange Sightings in Rose Park on Saturday Morning

Yoga in the Park with Dogs? Oh My!

Cars slowed, pedestrians stopped. They could not believe what they were seeing but everyone smiled. It was Tranquil Space yoga studio's Annual Doga in the Park! Kimberly Wilson the owner of Tranquil Space Studio has been doing the Annual Doga in the Park since May 2005. She explains that she is a dog owner and huge fan of the Washington Humane Society so it made sense to combine the Humane Society, Tranquil Space and Doggy Style Bakery to create a fun frolic outside. About twenty humans and a similar number of canines flowed and twisted in the heat and humidity. At least the humans did. The dogs panted and waited for a head scratch during every downward dog pose or forward fold. The Washington Humane Society had three adoptable and …

Yoga Studio Leaving Palisades

The Lil Omm studio is in search of a new home; its lease expires July 31.

Lil Omm yoga studio, currently located on V Street in the Palisades, will be leaving that location at the end of July, after their lease was not renewed by their landlord. “I'm sorry to say there's no real 'story' or drama, we had a short term lease and it was up, and our landlords decide not to renew. They wanted to convert the space back to office space,” said owner Pleasance Silicki. Silicki said that Lil Omm, which has been a part of the Palisades neighborhood since March of 2010, is a center for families which provides yoga, prenatal classes, childcare and many other services to the neighborhood. “Lil Omm is a community dedicated to engaged, inspired and connected families! From the womb to the wisdom years, it is our mission to …

Around Town: Lil Omm Celebrates Year of Helping Families find Inner Peace

Designed for parents, this yoga studio offers a space where families can practice yoga and parents enjoy classes covering topics from breast feeding 101 to nutrition and stress reduction.

Last Saturday was unusually busy at Lil Omm as families and instructors celebrated the yoga studio's year anniversary with cake and a zumba dance lesson. "I wanted to do something fun and different for our party, but it also had to be an activity that worked for all ages," said Pleasance Lowengard Silicki, founder of Lil Omm. Designed for families, the studio hosts yoga classes for parents and children of all ages. But Lowengard Silicki had a larger vision when she founded Lil Omm. She wanted it to be a community space where parents could bond with their children, but also find support. "We try to have something for every type of family, whether parents want joint classes and time with their kids or want adult classes and need a break to …

Creative DC Moms Winter Festival Celebrates Motherly Ingenuity

An ode to the urban mother.

Entering parenthood is like entering a whole other stratosphere in the universe. It’s inexplicable and nothing, except experience, can really prepare you for it. Being an urban mom is like being part of a sisterhood. Since entering this sisterhood ten months ago, I’ve met some incredible women. Some of them work outside the home and some have chosen to leave their high-powered careers to stay at home. ALL of them are creative, intelligent and resourceful people. Many of these women have ditched the desk and started their own businesses. I decided it was high time that these “‘mommypreneurs” got the credit they deserve and took it upon myself to organize a festival bringing some of  these local talented women together. That festival has …
