Man Drives Car into Canal, Rescued by FEMS

Witnesses called in the incident just after 3 p.m.

DC Fire and EMS extricated a man from his car after witnesses said the man drove his car off of the street and into the C&O Canal at 33rd and Water Streets, NW, according to DC FEMS Battalion Chief Brian Lee.  The man was lifted up the embankment of the canal and transported to Georgetown University Hospital as a priority 2, according to Lee. The man's car landed on a gravel area of the canal that did not have significant water. Metropolitan Police Department Public Information Officer Hugh Carew told Patch that the call for service came in at 3:03 p.m. Lee said as of 3:35 they had removed the man from the canal and he was on his way to the hospital. Neither MPD nor FEMS would comment on whether alcohol or another intoxicating substance …
