Canal Road is one of four DC roads to have its speed limit increased this week.
The new speed limit on Canal Road is 40 mph, increased from 35 mph. The higher speed limit applies to Canal Road from Chain Bridge to Foxhall Road. “Residents have asked us to reconsider the posted maximums in these areas and we’re confident these changes can be made without compromising safety,” said Mayor Vicent Gray in a press release. The changes on Canal Road and three others went into effect at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday. According to a news release, the District Department of Transportation "completed a review of roadways with automated speed enforcement and determined the speed limits on select roads could be increased immediately without significantly impacting safety." The District Department of Transportation has responded to the fallen tree.
Drivers are advised to avoid taking westbound Canal Road between Reservoir and Foxhall Roads, NW because of a fallen tree blocking one lane, according to an alert from DC Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency. The District Department of Transportation is on the scene addressing the issue, according to a tweet sent from the agency's Twitter account.

During off-peak hours a section of the road will be closed August 7-9 and 14-16.
Northbound and southbound Canal Road, NW between Reservoir Road and Arizona Avenue will be closed daily from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. starting this morning through Thursday. Next week there will be additional closures. The Department of Transportation’s Urban Forestry Administration and the National Park Service are conducting routine roadway maintenance activities. Roadwork on Canal Road could cause traffic problems
Drivers should be alert for single lane conditions and traffic stoppages along Canal Road Friday night through Saturday evening. Road work between Arizona Avenue and the Chain Bridge Road could back up traffic along Canal Road. District Department of Transpotation crews will be resurfacing the roadway along this stretch. DDOT will have signs and traffic control measures to alert drivers.

Road closures will allow local and federal authorities to inspect the railroad bridge over Canal Road at Arizona Avenue.
Drivers should expect lane closures on Canal Road throughout the day Thursday as the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), the National Park Service and the Federal Highway Administration inspect the railroad bridge over Canal Road at Arizona Avenue. According to a news release from DDOT, the bridge was damange in a recent crash involving a truck. The lane closures began at 10 a.m. and will continue through 2 p.m. According to the DDOT news release: Canal Road will be narrowed to one lane and flaggers will be onsite to guide two-way traffic through the work zone. The inspection work is expected to last until approximately 2 p.m. today. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes including MacArthur Boulevard.

Friday and Saturday, drivers should expect stoppages and lane closures along Canal Road between Foxhall Road and Arizona Avenue.
Avoid Canal Road Friday and Saturday and save yourself a headache. The District Department of Transportation continues work on segments of Canal Road and drivers can expect lane closures and traffic stoppages mid-day Friday, Feb. 3 and all day Saturday, Feb. 4. To allow DDOT crews to resurface the road between Foxhall Road and Arizona Avenue, flaggers will be alternating lane closures and enforcing five-minute stoppages between 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Friday and between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Drivers should expect delays and anticipate lane closures Jan. 28- Jan. 29 along segments of Canal Road as the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) resurfaces the road. Impacted areas are along Canal Road from Fox Hall Road to Arizona Avenue. Work will take place from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. According to a news release there will be flag persons and variable message boards to alert drivers: There will be two flag persons who will alternatively shut down one lane in each direction for a few minutes at a time. The construction zone will be about 50 to 100 feet long and this construction zone will keep moving from one place to another stopping at one location for about 30 minutes to 60 minutes.

DC Water will begin a two-phase repair project to rehabilitate a 48-inch water main on Canal Road NW and M Street NW.
DC Water will begin work on the two-phase internal joint repairs project today, impacting traffic on Canal Road and M Street. One eastbound lane on Canal Road will be closed during work hours, which are between 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. From Sunday through Thursday work will take place between 9:30 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. The work involves rehabilitating a 48-inch water main, which is part of a larger transmission main that delivers drinking water to various locations in and around the District. Expect delays during the morning commute due to an earlier fatal accident.
A fatal multi-vehicle accident on Canal Road at Clark Place has closed Canal Road from Arizona Avenue to Foxhall Road. Expect delays during the morning commute. Traffic traveling Eastbound is being diverted onto Reservoir Road and Westbound traffic is diverted to Foxhall Road. Canal Road is expected to remain closed throughout the morning commute. Initial reports indicate two fatalities resulted from the early morning crash.
