Veggie Delight in Hardy Learning Garden

The Georgetown school won a $3,500 grant from Loews to start a student-run vegetable garden.

Hardy Middle School sixth-graders got their hands dirty Wednesday and they didn't have to go downtown to the Thompson Building to do it. Thanks to a $3,500 grant from Loews, funds raised through a Sock Hop dance and the time donated by parents and teachers, Hardy Middle School has its very own fledgling community garden. Students planted tomato, pepper and other seeds in newly constructed plots on the school's grounds. "Learning doesn't happen just inside four walls of the classroom," science teacher Britni Whitty told her class of 20-some odd students.
