Mayor Vincent Gray will address budget issues related to Ward 2 residents.
Mayor Vincent Gray is going around the city to each ward to discuss his 2014 budget and will be coming to Ward 2 on Saturday, April 20. The meeting at the Charles Sumner School 1201 17th St. NW will run from 2 to 4 p.m. In March, Gray released his $10.1 billion Fiscal Year 2014 budget. The budget does not include any new taxes. The format at previous budget town halls in recent years was a presentation by the mayor and chief financial officer followed by questions from attendees. Ward 2 Councilman Jack Evans responded positively to the budget when the mayor sent it to the District Council last month. Evans was particularly pleased about funding to keep the DMV in Georgetown and expanded hours and days of service to seven days a week at all…

Mayor Anthony Williams appointed Ghandi as Chief Financial Officer in 2000.
Natwar Gandhi, the DC Chief Financial Officer, will resign from his position effective June 1 of this year. He was originally appointed by Mayor Anthony Williams in 2000 and was re-appointed by Mayor Vincent Gray to another five-year term last June. Just last week Gandhi and Gray announced a budget surplus for FY2013, which will bring the Fund Balance to about $1.5 billion—its largest in seven years. Gandhi offered his resignation to Gray in a letter Friday, calling it "not an easy decision." Gray called Gandhi "an exemplary steward of the District’s finances" in a press release. “In the time that he has served as our Chief Financial Officer, he has helped take us from the days of the Control Board to our just-announced $417 million Fiscal…

District matters had been previously delegated to a subcommittee of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee.
DC politicians are praising Congressman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), chairman of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, for his decision to move District of Columbia matters to the full committee. The move is seen as a signal that Issa will continue to take an active role in advocating for DC budget autonomy and other rights. "I’m glad that someone who has proven to be a trustworthy partner in respecting our autonomy will be leading congressional handling of affairs that affect our city, and I look forward to working with him on the Height Act, budget autonomy and other efforts during the 113th Congress," Mayor Vincent Gray said in a press release. In the past several Congresses, a subcommittee considered issues or bills pertinent to …

D.C. government agencies ready for hurricane by clearing storm drains, deploying generators and distributing sand bags.
The District of Columbia government is preparing for the possible impact of Hurricane Sandy by taking precautionary measures and establishing a plan to respond to the potential effects of the storm on the District. “Crucial District government agencies are already implementing their storm-response plans,” said City Administrator Allen Y. Lew in a press release. “We will be ready for this storm.” As of Saturday morning the storm was looking like "a hybrid cyclone," the National Weather Service noted in its Friday night discussion of the storm posted on its Web site. "That means it has some attributes of a hurricane and some of a nor’easter," the Capital Weather Gang explained in its blog. “Meteorologists are sounding increasingly dire …

Mall landlords unwilling to confirm DMV's return to Georgetown Park.
Though city leaders have promised that the Department of Motor Vehicles will return to Georgetown, a representative for the Georgetown Park Mall made the agency's seem return a bit less certain. Scott Milsom, speaking for Georgetown Park Mall's landlords Vornado Realty Trust, told the Advisory Neighborhood Commission at a September meeting, that negotiations with the DMV were "ongoing." Milsom said "nothing has been finalized" and that it was his understanding that the DMV would prefer to be near a metro stop. Milsom's comments came as a surprise. At the Citizens Association of Georgetown annual meeting in May, Ward 2 Councilman Jack Evans told the community that the DMV would return to Georgetown Park. Evans said that Mayor Vincent Gray "…

The proposed development would bring a 10-story office building with ground-floor retail and underground parking to 1050 21st St.
Mayor Vincent Gray announced last week that Akridge-Argos development team and Ivymount Schools and Programs will redevelop the historic Stevens School site in the West End neighborhood of the District. The joint team will redevelop the existing school, which has been closed since the end of the 2008 school year, and will develop an office building on another part of the site at 1050 21st St. Georgetowners are familiar with Argos for the developer's current project, converting the Hurt Home into the Montrose Condominiums. According to a press release from the mayor's office: “My administration has worked closely with West End residents and Advisory Neighborhood Commission 2A to ensure that we made positive choices for the future of the …

The 15-unit building will have 30 parking spaces.
The historic Hurt Home, which the District sold to developers Argos Group for $775,000, will become The Montrose condominiums in a year's time if all goes according to plan. Mayor Vincent Gray, Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development Victor Hoskins, developer Gilbert Cardenas, Ward 2 Councilman Jack Evans and Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner Charlie Eason shoveled the ceremonial groundbreaking dirt for the 15-unit project Monday. Of the 15 for-sale units, three will be reserved as affordable housing for blind people with an income up to 80 percent below the area median income (AMI). The developer will work with the DC Council for the Blind to help identify potential occupants for those affordable units. The Montrose will offer…

Tim Downs played a pivotal role in bringing the O & P Street Project to fruition.
Tim Downs, who lives on P Street with his wife Barbara, received a surprise Thursday, when several dozen members of the community gathered on the sidewalk in front of his home to say thank you. Downs, who is battling cancer, was wheeled to a balcony window so he could see his friends and neighbors as one by one they offered speeches and words of gratitude. Mayor Vincent Gray even declared Aug. 16 Tim Downs Day. "We are here, Tim, to tell you how much we appreciate your contribution to the Georgetown community," said ANC Commissioner Ed Solomon. Downs has been an active member of the Georgetown community and played a key role in seeing the O and P Street Project finally happen, after more than 20 years of advocacy. "Without your efforts, …

Mayor Vincent Gray's 2010 Campaign is under federal investigation
Councilmembers David Catania, Mary Cheh and Muriel Bowser have each said Mayor Vincent Gray should resign after recent revelations of fraud and a $653,800 shadow campaign bring into question the validity of his election in 2010. Gray donor Jeanne Harris pleaded guilty to running a "shadow campaign" by obscuring and not reporting campaign expenses and contributions. In an interview with Fox 5 news Wednesday, Councilman David Catania was the first to call for Gray's resignation. Catania said if he were in Gray's position. "I would have said 'Regardless of whether or not I knew anything, and I didn't, such a cloud has been placed over my government and my legitimacy as mayor that I believe it's in the best interest to end this distraction and…
Gray: 'This is not the campaign that we intended to run'
Mayor Vincent Gray asked reporters and constituents to draw a fine line between his campaign for mayor, which has faced serious legal scrutiny of late, and the work his administration has done since he took office. "This is not the campaign that we intended to run," Gray told reporters, referencing the guilty plea entered yesterday by Gray donor Jeanne Harris. Tuesday, Harris pleaded guilty to running a "shadow campaign" by obscuring and not reporting some $653,800 in campaign expenses and contributions. "More than a year ago I was the one for who called for an investigation of my own campaign," Gray reminded reporters. He said he wanted to become mayor "for the right reasons" for the city he loves. "I’d invite you and others to take a …
