Bus Changes Considered for Glover Park

The Advisory Neighborhood Commission is seeking public input on Metro's proposed bus changes.

Metro has proposed removing two bus stop location and has offered two solutions to prevent buses from idling near Stoddert Elementary during the school day. The Glover Park Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) is seeking public input on both issues. The ANC will discuss the proposals at the May 9 meeting. Should you care to comment on the proposals, you may send your preferences or comments via email at info@anc3b.org. Removing Bus Stops 41st and Calvert Street NW A no parking zone near this stop prevents the bus from stopping up against the curb, according to the ANC email. 'Pie in the Face' for Glover Park Teacher (Video)

Steve Dingledine, a fifth-grade teacher at Stoddert Elementary, continued this messy tradition

Steve Dingledine, a fifth-grade teacher at Stoddert Elementary, got creamed — chocolate cream to be precise — Thursday afternoon on the school playground. It was the fourth annual Pie in the Face day event.  Two sisters baked their own pies — one chocolate and one cherry pie — and promptly shoved them in Dingledine's face to the delight of their schoolmates. Dingledine participates in this sweet and sticky tradition each year as part of a "thank you" to students who have just finished days of standardized testing under the District of Columbia Comprehensive assessment System. The honor of throwing a pie in his face is a prize auctioned each year at the PTA's annual Big Chili fundraiser.  Fellow fifth-grade teacher Craig Duff led students …

Watch: Norwegian King’s Guard at Stoddert Elementary

The Band and Drill team of the Norwegian King’s Guard performed on the Stoddert Elementary field in Glover Park Tuesday.

One of only three performances by the Band and Drill team of the Norwegian King’s Guard during their current visit to the U.S. happened Tuesday right in Glover Park at Stoddert Elementary. A slight drizzle could not deter the 120-member King’s Guard as they performed a range of routines in full dress uniform on the Stoddert baseball field on Calvert Street, NW. One of the Stoddert fifth-grade classes is partnered with the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Washington, D.C. as part of the Embassy Adoption Program. The King's Guard was in the D.C. area because of its participation in the Virginia International Tattoo—a military musical display—in Norfolk, Va. last week. The King's Guard in responsible for the safety of the Norwegian royal family. …

Cuts to Stoddert Pre-K Made with 'A Lot of Thought'

Principal Patricia Pride cut a pre-K class for next year in favor of adding a fourth kindergarten class to meet demand at Glover Park's Stoddert Elementary.

Cutting a pre-K class to add a fourth kindergarten class at Glover Park's Stoddert Elementary was both a long time coming and a too-late-for-some decision, according to school Principal Patricia Pride. Many future Stoddert Elementary parents were left in the lurch after the pre-K lottery results came in last Friday and dozens of local children were unable to get a slot in their local school in part because there will be one, instead of two, pre-K classes this fall. Pride said the kindergarten classes have been over-enrolled for several years and even though the school added a third kindergarten class a few years ago, this year all three were over the ideal ratio of 20 students per class. DCPS is required to find space for all in-boundary …

I sent you an email a while ago and I'll resend it. After reviewing what I wrote- I had second thoughts about the phrasing. Since I've met you I can attest to what a great person you are. My beef is with DCPS and not you and if I implied that- my apologies. Unless they fired their demographer, they could have predicted an overall growth pattern when they made the plans to renovate Stoddert a few …   more ›

Stoddert Parents Consider Retaining Interim Principal

Patricia Pride was appointed as the interim principal for the 2012-2013 by Schools Chancellor Kaya Henderson.

Stoddert Elementary School parents are considering whether they would like to permanently appoint interim Principal Patricia Pride or to proceed with a formal principal selection process. Last summer DC Public Schools Chancellor Kaya Henderson appointed an interim principal for Stoddert Elementary, despite an active principal selection process at the Glover Park school. "Although DCPS will not reach out to parents until this Spring, the LSAT* is seeking parent input now on retaining Principal Pride permanently or moving forward on forming a panel," according to a newsletter sent Friday. Four parents elected by the Stoddert community represent parent interest in issues like the DCPS budget and other administrative matters through the Local …

Stoddert Peacebuilders Visit U.S. Institute of Peace

Fifth grade students had lesson outside their Glover Park classroom at the Global Peacebuilding Center.

A fifth grade class from Glover Park's Stoddert Elementary recently visited the Global Peacebuilding Center at the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP) to learn about what they can do to create a more peaceful future in their communities and the world. The visit was featured on the USIP website. Stoddert teacher—and Patch blogger—Steve Dingledine helped several students create the Peacebuilders group. Dingledine said he wanted to demonstrate to students that peace requires work. "Conflict is a part of the world, like it or not, and it takes skilled action to make sure it doesn't cause too many problems or worse, violence. The students are about to go into situations in middle and high school that will require skilled action," Dingledine told …

The Big Chili Needs You

Stoddert Elementary's annual fundraising event needs volunteers.

Glover Park's Stoddert Elementary School needs volunteers to help make the annual Big Chili event April 27 a success. Stoddert needs a wide range of assistance — whether you are willing to canvass for silent auction items or roll up your sleeves to set up tables and chairs at the actual event. Since the 1980s the Stoddert community has been hosting the Big Chili event to raise funds for a variety of needs at the school. In past years funds have gone to extra supplies for teachers and new resources for the library, among other uses. In its origin the Bid Chili was just a potluck of families on the playground. These days the event has taken place at such notable venues as the Russian and French embassies. The 2013 Big Chili will be at the …

PHOTOS: Stoddert Fall Festival 2012

The Stoddert Elementary community gathered for the annual school celebration.

Hundreds of parents and kids, school and community members filled Stoddert Elementary's fields for the Glover Park school's annual Fall Festival on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. Classrooms sponsored games like pumpkin bowling and a duck pond. There were activities like a moon bounce, spin art, face painting and pumpkin painting. The nearby Whole Foods donated the pumpkins. In addition to games and activities there were dining options from local eateries Rockland's and Armand's and music to make the day feel truly festive. Over the past several weeks parents donated old, gently used costumes for a Halloween costume “store.” Volunteers mended and washed costumes that could be purchased for "new to you" gear for this year's Halloween. The …
