Families come in all different shapes and sizes, but they all share a deep love for one another. Young learners aged 18 months to four years old will explore the very important people in their own family trees, as well as participate in story time and a craft.
All children must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration for both child and accompanying adult is required.

Hear about the discovery of the location of a possible enslaved home space in the orchard at Tudor Place. Kerri Barile Tambs of Dovetail Cultural Resource Group walks us through an archaeological survey in 2010 that uncovered a curious cluster of artifacts in the North Garden. Return visits in 2013 and 2022 suggested a former multiuse structure dating from the first half of the 19th century! Come and learn how archaeology plays a part in helping to tell the full story of life at Tudor Place.

Landmark Lecture: Archaeology of a Possible Enslaved Home Space

For over 200 years, Peter family members served and volunteered in five wars, stretching from the War of 1812 to World War II. Some found themselves far from home, volunteering abroad during World War I, while others faced their family members on opposing sides of the Civil War. Tudor Place houses a rich collection photographs and objects that capture their experiences. Join us for an evening exploring their stories.

Young learners aged 18 months to 4 years and their caregivers will learn about the vital role bees play in our ecosystem, how their tiny community operates, and visit our on-site hives. Enjoy a group reading of a book on pollinators, create a moveable pollinator craft, and sing along to songs celebrating the work these pollinators do to keep our planet alive and beautiful.
All children must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration for both child and accompanying adult is required.

Tudor Place’s own Rob DeHart and Ianna Recco discuss one of the most unique artworks in the Tudor Place Collection: an eighteenth-century diorama of miniature wax sculptures created by New Yorker Samuel Fraunces and gifted to Martha Washington in 1783. Rob will outline its complex 10-year conservation journey. The sculpted wax figures from the tableau will be displayed for the first time in over a decade. Ianna will discuss the symbolism behind the tableau’s depiction of a scene from the ancient Greek epic poem the Iliad and its significance for colonial Americans.

Bring a picnic and enjoy live theater on the sprawling South Lawn. The Picnic Theatre Group will present a play adaptation of The Candidate, set in 1972. In this satire of electoral politics in America, the heir of a famous political family is tapped to run a hopeless campaign against a powerful incumbent Senator. Be transported to the 1970s with music and costumes on the campaign trail.
Guests are encouraged to bring water. Be sure to remove all trash. Trash receptacles are not provided. Bring mats, blankets or a camp chair. Due to the historic landscape, games, chairs with legs, blow up furniture, red wine etc. are not permitted.
Grounds open at 5:30 p.m. The performance begins at 7:00 p.m. (90 minutes, no intermission).

Locks of hair have held symbolic power for people throughout history. Whether it is memento of friendship and familial bonds or a token of superstition and luck, collecting hair is an intimate form of human connection. The Tudor Place Collection has dozens of preserved locks of hair, including many from George Washington. Join us for an evening untangling this history and the chance to see historic hair accessories like ornate combs, brushes and ornaments.
