Burglaries Increase in Georgetown by 39 Percent

The 2013 summer saw an increase compared to last summer.

Between June 1 and early September there were 25 burglaries in Georgetown, the majority of which targeted garages, according to Metropolitan Police Department Lt. John Hedgecock.

Hedgecock described it as an "increasing trend in burglaries."

Crime Map statistics available on the MPD website indicate there were 18 burglaries during the same period in 2012, a 39 percent increase year over year.

At a meeting Tuesday, Hedgecock said most of the recent incidents happened between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. and very often the items stolen were bicycles.

"We have several different strategies we’re deploying in the Second District to address this," he said.

Hedgecock asked residents to report to 911 any suspicious behavior, especially in alleys or near garages.
