Explore using various media (printmaking, collage, painting) to create your monotype artwork. In this workshop we will discuss the principles and elements of design, composition, and combining drawing, texture, and color to create a monotype of an image using line on plexiglass, collage, and painting. Students will learn to transfer an image to paper, add collage materials, and paint onto the image to create final one-of-a-kind pieces of artwork.
On the first day of class, students are expected to bring their sketchbook and multiple inspirational images (landscape, still life, portrait, abstract, photograph, etc.) to review for their mixed media piece. Artwork should be sized to 8x10 or 4x5 on paper; colored image preferred, but not critical. Students will be expected to work on their own during the workshop. By the end of this workshop, students will have basic knowledge on how to create a monotype and add mixed media and color to a print.

Join us for a fun-filled 6-week art summer camp with Sadie Randal, designed for kids aged 10 to 14 - it's gonna be epic!
<h3>Goals</h3>
Students will:
- Learn the basics of carving linoleum to create various sized prints
- Learn the fun of printmaking
Make something they are proud of
- Become storytellers
- Develop creativity and passion
- Build confidence (speak to an audience to present their work, and express their feelings) - Develop intuition for giving feedback, critique, and praise (feelings matter and how you deliver feedback is impactful)
All measurements written in the document are in inches, i.e., 3x4, 5x7, 8x11
Students who sign up are expected to have respect for others in the classroom and will be given three warnings before the instructor will speak to parents about removal from the summer camp
(Students are expected to attend for as many days out of the week as possible)
August 5-9, 2024 (these will be considered make-up dates for students who need to miss days during the 6 weeks)

Explore the art of watercolor and learn new techniques in this class for beginner and intermediate-level painters. Practice watercolor techniques as you explore the unique properties of the medium in this three part workshop series - take them as a series or stand alone workshops! In workshop one, we will cover color mixing, interactions between colors, and how artists use color for storytelling and mood. Students will create their own unique color palettes to be used as a resource for a painting project of their choice. Workshop two will include a hands-on study of the array of possible mark making available to us with different watercolor brush shapes and varying amounts of water, and additional non-brush techniques for introducing texture. Students will then choose three or more of these techniques to apply to painting a still-life arrangement. In workshop three, we will discuss flat and graduated washes and the possibilities of watercolor as a translucent medium for slowly building up rich and varied color. Students will then apply the discussed approaches to either a landscape or portrait.

Ever see these techniques referenced in art museums and wonder what they mean?
All of these are various techniques artists have developed throughout history to help make painting difficult subject matters more approachable and allow artists to explore the transparent and sculptural nature of oil paint. 
In this class, students will learn how to think about their artwork in layers and explore some of the mysterious interactions of color that captivated artists throughout history. Over this 11-week class, students will learn different methods to efficiently sketch with paint, experiment with various methods layering paint, and make artwork that is in dialogue with artists through history. 
Please note: Safety will be a primary concern of this class, but this class will use traditional art materials which if handled improperly are hazardous to one’s health. Due to the use of solvents, this class is not recommended for students with respiratory conditions.

Paint: My favorite brand is Gamblin. Utrecht makes wonderful budget paints. Any brand is fine with the exception of Winsor and Newton (terrible value) and Blick Studio (terrible in general).

Whether you want to be a traditional oil painter or a digital illustrator, it is very important to have a solid foundation in drawing.
This 9-week class will allow students to pursue their own interests in art while also being introduced to fundamental principles of drawing. This class will start with pencil, then explore powdered graphite, and pen. Students will be provided with a mix of drawing exercises to develop their skills and opportunities to develop their own interests.

Budget frames cost $200-$300 and high-quality frames cost $400-$800. For any artist, framing is always a pervasive problem and sometimes a crippling cost. Fortunately, with a little bit of knowledge and the right tools and materials, it doesn’t have to be you can build the highest possible quality frame for approximately $40. This class will cover everything from basic woodworking with hand tools to cutting glass and archivally matting artwork. By the end of this class, you will have a complete frame and all of the knowledge you need to make your own frames going forward.
Please note: Students will be expected to bring their own artwork to frame Artwork must be under 20” x 26”. The price of class reflects the cost of artwork framed with UV protective glass. The maximum dimension frame that glass is practical is 24” x 30”. 
If any artist is interested in larger, the price of class will be adjusted to reflect the cost of UV Plexi.
$400 for 4 weeks of classes. All materials provided except listed tools below.

Whether you are looking to apply to art school or not, a strong art portfolio will make you stand out from other applicants.
Colleges look for a mix of artwork that displays technical proficiency and explores
issues and ideas that are important to the artist on a personal level. This class will help students develop their college art portfolios and prepare students for college level art critique so they will feel more comfortable talking about their artwork.
Class time will be tailored to individual students’ needs and interests. Critiques will beheld as a group.

There are a lot less steps involved in making a frame from scratch for a painting than to make a frame for works on paper. That being said, there still are a couple of tricks that are helpful to know to make a frame by hand at a professional level. This class will teach you everything you need to get started and allow you to frame 2-3 paintings.
Note: Student’s will be required to provide paintings that they wish to be framed. Size limit of 24 x 36 for paintings. Class price includes $100 in frame stock. Expensive wood such as Walnut will be available if requested. Market prices fluctuate and students will be consulted before any purchases are made for them.
To reduce the hazard sawdust poses to student’s health, all woodworking in this class will be done outside with a mask.
$400 for 4 weeks of classes. $100 of frame stock provided with class. All other materials provided except listed tools below.

Want to develop your interest as an artist and looking for a place to start? Whether you want to make artwork that is realistic or abstract, all art shares the same fundamentals.
Beginning with traditional forms of drawing, this 7-week class will start by teaching comparative measurement and drawing from direct observation. Next this class will teach students how to work with photographs and use cameras as a means of augmenting their creativity instead of limiting it. Finally, this class will teach students how to find inspiration from various sources throughout art history and set students down the path towards understanding composition.

At the end of the class an exhibition with the students ‘artwork will be held at the Book Hill Georgetown library.

Framing on a budget and not looking to make a frame by hand from scratch?
This class will show you how to turn a cheap frame from a box store like Ikea into something that is archival and can be presented in professional contexts.
In this class you will learn how to cut UV glass to protect your art, easily archivally float your artwork on mat boards, and the basic woodworking required to reinforce a budget frame to reduce its chances of warping over time.
 Note: Students are required to provide artwork dimensions to William Demaria at <a href="mailto:wdemariaart@gmail.com">wdemariaart@gmail.com</a> prior to the start of the class so that an appropriately sized frame can be purchased before the start of the class. Default frames will be white. Different color frames can be purchased if specifically requested. 
Artwork must be under 20” x 26”. The price of class reflects the cost of artwork framed with UV protective glass.
