Clark Construction workers laid white slabs of subflooring over the Washington Harbour fountain on Thursday to begin its conversion into an ice-skating rink that should be finished by mid-November.

Workers will lay refrigerator tubes over the subflooring to freeze 3-inches of water to create the ice rink’s surface.

The ice rink has a larger footprint than the fountain, said Jenny DeMeo, Washington Harbour General Manager.

President of Friends of Georgetown Waterfront Park Bob von Eigen believes the waterfront park will be another asset to Washington Harbour.

“That area has been abandoned in the winter, but now it’s going to be an attraction,” said Eigen.

The construction has attracted a fair share of attention from passersby.

Adam Gezelle, who works in Georgetown near the waterfront, told Patch that he looks forward to skating on the rink with his son once it opens in November.
