Yard-Hopping Burglars Hit at Least 8 Georgetown Garages, Homes

At least eight homes and garages in Georgetown were burglarized in the past several days.

Georgetown was hit with burglaries to eight homes and garages between Thursday and Monday, with six recorded incidents and at least two others reported by residents, but not reflected in police reports.

Update: Police: String of Burglaries Mostly Involved Unlocked Garages

The burglaries impacted homes on the 3000 block of N Street NW, the 3400 block of Prospect Street NW, the 3600 block of O Street NW, and two on the 3300 block of Dent Place NW, according to police reports. Two others were mentioned by neighbors in emails on the neighborhood listserv: one of the 3400 block of N Street NW, and a second also on the 3400 block of Prospect Street NW.

Garages on the 3400 block of Prospect Street NW, 3400 block of N Street, the 2700 block of O Street NW were all burglarized during the night Sunday or early morning Monday, resulting in several stolen bicycles and some property damage, according to reports from police and residents.

In the incident Sunday night in the 2700 block of O Street NW:

"The homeowners’ report they discovered that during the late evening to possibly early morning hours while they were in their home, suspect(s) unknown, entered the attached garage by breaking a window in a door and removed several bicycles," according to an email from Second District Lt. Alan Hill.

A homeowner on the 3400 block of N Street wrote to advise neighbors:

"Last night, our garage was broken into. Although the cars were rifled through, limited property was removed. We have notified the police but wanted to let the neighborhood know and, in particular, residents of the south side of the 3400 block on N street, since the only way the thieves would have been able to enter the garage as they did (ie, from the garden) would have been to go through other backyards on that block and jump the fences."

A resident of the 3400 block of Prospect Street, which shares an alley with the 3400 block of N Street NW, wrote that both his garage and a neighbor's were broken into:

"We had a garage break-in as well and did lose items both from within cars and a high-end racing bicycle," he wrote.

Several of the reports indicated it was the home and not the garage that was burglarized.

Police have not said whether they believe all or some of the incidents are related.
